My ultra was for the wifes comfort. Now Im spoiled. It is very nimble and handles great for a big bike. I clean mine in about an hour. Come on!! anything more than that is ************.
I had a Deluxe and now have an Ultra. I ride mine every chance I get, even if it's to the grocery store a mile down the road. I travel a ton for work and have little interest in driving anywhere that's over 300 miles, so most of my riding is local. It handles much better than my Softail and the ride can't be compared.
Get one and make the tour pack detachable and get a single seat. It's great to just cruise around town.
As someone said above, there's a reason they call it an Ultra.
With an ultra, you find reasons TO ride it, instead of excuses why you can't. I am as comfortable going across town as I am going across the state. To be fair, I could care less about being cool, I bought it to ride, and now that everything fits me ( I am 6'5" ) It's the best bike I have ever owned.
I don't ride long distances either but enjoy the Ultra all the same. The wife really likes the the Ultra over my past rides and that settles that. I no longer get complaints on what I buy for the bike!
5000 miles a year is not too shabby. I traded an '03 RK for an '06 Ultra and never regretted it. I ride about 8000 miles/year with a 1 week trip thrown in. Much of my riding is 100 miles/day. The Ultra handles beautifully and is extremely comfortable. It is a fantastic machine. My riding buddy just traded his '03 RK for an '08 Ultra, and he can't believe he hesitated. Enjoy.
I just got an ultra and I will tell you you will enjoy it no matter how many niles you drive a year.I also have a goldwing but enjoy the ultra for the ride, sound, and comfort.Even if you don't use it every day it is still a great ride.I drive semi too and don't always get to ride alot or long distance but when I do I sure enjoy it.Nice to have radio to listen to just for short trips and bags are nice to beable to carry a few thing with you and for that run to the store to pick up a few things. They are a few $more than the other models but worth every bit as far I am concerned.Best of luck.
