I would like to help with the fuel costs but I/we can't unless we just don't buy it. If we don't buy it someone else will. I filled up my car-11 gallon tank, truck-18 gallon tank, tractor 24 gallon tank, all 3 bikes-total of 11 gallons. Cost was $364. So I don't mind paying for high test for my Harley because I use it most and it gets the best mileage. Oh, forgot the Suzuki gets 65 mpg.

I do not suggest using regular fuel in your Harley.

Stick with premium fuel, the extra cost is minimal compared to a damaged engine later.

mine was filled when I got it. First fill-up was regular, all my other bikes take it. No troubles so every fill up since has been with regular. Not a sign of trouble in 2 years.

I filled with the el cheapo the other day out of habit. Really didn't notice a difference until my gauge was on E. The mpg went down. Spend the tiny extra.

I rented an Ultra last Oct.that had 16,000 when I picked it up. It ran soooooo badly I almost turned right around and took it back. But I held out and after 3 or so tanks of premimum it ran like a banchee. I could not beleive the diffrence.

Have not tried regular yet and don't plan to, but my RK runs just fine on mid grade. No pinging, no roughness, she takes throttle fine and seems willing to run just as hard as I ask her to. I suppose that's one advantage to not hopping them up.

I also gotta say she runs a little quicker, a lot smoother and is just a lot easier to live with without the Rineharts. My 2 cents.

In a years time I pay around $750 more (for around 5000 miles) buying premium. Obviously if that's what I need, that's what I will get. I am not a tight *** as one person so graciously put it and I am not complaining asanother person put it, I was just asking if it was really neccesary. I thought that's what this forum was about. I really don't know that much about the effects of low octane on a Harley engine. Thanks to all that passed along useful info. As always I appreciate it.

Wow! My math must really be rusty. Putting on 10,000 a year, averaging 40 mpg, I'll use 250 gallons. At $.15 a gallon more for premium, I figure I'll only spend $37.50 more for premium.

Someone please tell me where I made the mistake figuring the higher cost of premium? $37.50 is a long ways from $750 for twice as many miles!
