My wife has a car (Miata) that supposedly needs premum fuel: I never understood it, as its not a real high horsepower job. We tried it on regular once and it very obviously doesn't like it, pings, etc. We've had this car for years now, and italways runs just fine on mid grade. If you are one of those people that is not really in tune with your machine, don't bother, but if you are, try a tank of whatever you want next time and see how it runs. Harley Davidsons are not rocket science and IMHO you are not going to destroy one with one tank of gas. If it pings, you have your answer andjust back off hard charging until you can top up with a higher grade. If regular doesn't work, I think I'd run a tank or two of premium thru it before I tried the mid grade.
I heard about that FUZZY math before!
Looks to me like I spent $1371.00 for gas last year (16,000 miles @ 42 mpg and allowing 3.599/gal. for 93 octane. If I had used 87 to 89 octane and gotten 40 mpg for $3.399/gal., I would have spent $1,359.00. A savings of $12.00!!!! A dollar a month!! Worth it? Not to me.
I've wondered... How much of the 87 stuff is left in the hose when you select 93 octane on a single hose pump? I often top off with about 2 gallons or so in anticipation of a long run. I go to one of the two stations in the county that have separate hoses for each grade. Probably doesn't make a hill of beans difference, I suppose. For that matter, since not that many vehicles use the 93 stuff anymore, maybe it's getting stale sitting in the tanks anyway.
In a years time I pay around $750 more (for around 5000 miles) buying premium. Obviously if that's what I need, that's what I will get. I am not a tight *** as one person so graciously put it and I am not complaining asanother person put it, I was just asking if it was really neccesary. I thought that's what this forum was about. I really don't know that much about the effects of low octane on a Harley engine. Thanks to all that passed along useful info. As always I appreciate it.
Damn. You must be paying about $6 a gallon more for premium than regular. I would question using premium also.
