Here's my experience. This past weekend I chased beemers around the Smokey Mountains. Had a great time. Deals gap, the Cherohola Parkway, you name it. I found that I consumed about 12 ozs. of oil in about 500 mile of fast riding. I didn't ride the bike typical of HD, a bit more as it should be to achieve maximum performance. 4500 RPM while approaching a turn only to use engine braking necessary to power out of the turn at about 3300 RPM. It was quite enjoyable, and the bike performed very well. The question is , where did my oil go? There were no leaks that I could find. Is this something I should be concerned about? My gut feeling is no. What do you think?
On my last bike I burned a little oil when I ran Dino, switched to amsoil and no more problem, but since you already run a good synthetic, I couldn't tell you. Have you pulled the spark plugs to look for signs of burning, also check you air filter like suggested by someone else. I hope you find the answer.
I would have to say probably crankcase vents also. I have a 07 FLHX and have noticed some oil use also. I have checked my plugs and no signs of oil on them but when I take the air filter off their is always oil on the backing plate and intake. I have a ANBS so the oil that comes out ofthe vents is channeled into the throttle body and does not end up on the side of the bike. I think there is also a relationship with moreconsumption the harder the bike is ridden.
I would say at the high RPMS you were just burning it. I wouldn't worry if consumption returns to normal. My truck towing my large trailer burns a quart in 2500 miles. Take the trailer off and no oil consumption in 5k miles. It does this every time I tow a heavy load.
Like others have said check your air filter if its not wet with oil you were probably sucking it past the rings and burning it.
If this is the first time you have pushed your motor this hard for this long you might have finally got it broken in good.
The next time you run like this you might not lose any or at least less that is if your were not blowing through the crank case breathers into you air filter.
