Default Camping/Motorcycle

I am traveling to Yellowstone from Boston this summer and am interested in camping, in part, to keep the lodging costs down. However, while tents and sleeping bags are much more compact, and hence motorcycle friendly, I just wonder if summertime camping across Ohio, Illinois andIowa, until I reach theRockies is a bad idea? I keep thinking July in a tent in the midwest could be pretty darn hot in which case very little sleep.I always assumed if big rain was on the way I'd do a hotel. Any of you have suggestions on the wisdom, or lack thereof, in campingalong the route I've suggested?

It's probably goin to be hotter than your used too in new england. It'll reach well over 100 with dew points in the 80's, but it will slowly cool down to less than 80 at night.

Not necessarily unbearable. If you have too ,sleep on top of the bag rather than in it. You may even be able to forego the tent if it's too hot.

The wife & I are going to tent it this year. Finally gonna vacation on the bike. We used to pull a camper to the lake & go boating. Finally got rid of all the kids & since it's just her & I we bought a trailer to pull behind the bike. anxiously looking forward to it.

Anyway best of luck to you. There's a lot of beautiful country out there. Imagine what it was like for the pioneers on the wagon trail going 20 miles a day. You won't have to worry about the indians, Just idiots not paying attention in their cages.

Not to steal the thread but what camper did you go with? We are getting ready to buy one and so far this is the model we like the best.

I live in Ohio...have camped in Ohio, Pa, and NY in July...days probably in the 80's, but nights are pretty comfy for sleeping outside.Good luck and be safe. When is your trip anyway? I'll be gone 4th of July week, but if you travel anywhere near Cleveland when I am aroundsend me a private message. We can hook up for coffee or dinner or something.

We've camped throughout the midwest and the Rockies. Last summer it was hot in Mo. We bought a $4.00 fan at Wallyworld and that made it OK. Rockies can get cool at night so make sure your sleeping bag is adequate

The last three years, I've been in Northern Ohio on the first weekend of Aug. The first year in a campground, freezing, with only tent, air matress, and a light blanket. The next two years in a motel. The weather around Lake Erie during that time is 80s during the days, and 50s at night.

Not sure what route you are taking but I did a similar trip thru SD then down to cody to yellowstone. Along the way are KOA campgrounds and most of them have cabins. If my memory serves me right about $45 a night vs the $30 bucks for tent site. Sometimes having a roof and a bedis a nice break. Plus you don't have to pack and repack. Never had a proble pulling in and getting a cabin if you get there early enough in the day. Weekends it was tougher but during the week not a problem. The KOA in Cody WY was really nice and most of them are. Clean crappers and biker friendly. If you get a KOA card for $20 you save 10% on every visit. Pays for itself in a couple of days.

Have a great trip, I had a blast in 2006

It probably won't be too hot. I live in Iowa and camping has never been unbearable. We'll be camping on our summer trip this year from June 28 - July 8th from here to Colorado and who knows where.

I don't think heat will be a major issue, unless you drift south, and try to cross Missouri, Kansas, etc.....stick to a more northern route, and you oughta be fine.

Hubby and I are camping when we go to the 105 party this summer. I am actually looking forward to it, even though I am a "modern" girl and like my bed, and shower, and electricity. Hopefully we won't have too many problems. I don't think we will have to worry about the weather being too cold, since it will be the end of August.

Good luck on your trip!
