Folks, I'm trying to remove the factory slip-ons. I've loosened/removed the three clamps that hold it on, but that sucker is stuck in there. Tried using a block of wood with a hammer to try and break the seal, but no go. I'm afraid to put too much torque on the pipe because the cross over pipe isn't secure and springy.BTW it's the left (fake) slip on I'm removing right now. I'm going to have a cold one now to see if the gurus can give me some ideas.
I sprayed mine with Rustbuster and set down facing the bike, with my foot on the muffler joint. grabbed the end of the muffler and pulled it sideways a little. It didn't take much, mine came loose. Hope this helps.
I once had a set of Trident headers stuck on the heads. I called Mike the Mechanic at Baxter's in Marne Iowa, and he told me to use Sea Foam "Deep Creep." It is a foaming penetrating oil.
It worked.
To take off my Ultra Slip-ons, I did have to rock them back and forth, up and down quite a bit, even after using the Deep Creep. Theyhave a slotted end that squeezes together with the clamps, and it seems you have to get that to spread a little to get them off.
I just replaced my stock slip-ons yesterday with some shiny new Rineharts.
Initially I had the same problem. It wouldn't budge. I sprayed some good ol' WD-40 where the muffler pipe slides on to the header pipe and it was good to go. Spray it on, let it work for about 1 -2 min and then it should start to break free.
PB blaster http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?actio...34-56167-20-PBfor one. it is available most anywhere.you say the three clamps. do you meant the 1 pipe clamp where the muffler clamps to the head pipe and the 2 bracket bolts under the bag? gently rock the muffler back and forth and twist until you open the clamp area up then twist as you pull.
Twisting it will help. Sears makes a rubber strap wrench that you can use. Believe me, you'll use the wrench in the future. They don't cost much and will save you a lot of grief. if you pound on the muffler you'll ruin it.
