Hey, I was watching the evening national news tonight and they had a story about the tire industry, it appears tire dealers were selling tires that were manufactured up to 10 years ago, but they were new, well, when these tires are sold new, some of them seperate and cause crashes, this is only for cars and trucks, but i was thinking, could this happen to motorcycle tires too? I saw the date of manufatuer on the tires, I won't be home till tomorrow to checkout my tires on my bike. the code numbers on the car tires were like in a circle with the numbers, example, 0407, which means they were manufactured in April of 2007. simple. So I have been told to not ride on my tires after 4 years old, what happens if I check the manufacture date and the tire is like 8 to 10 years old! My question is how old of a tire should we trust our lives with on the road? I welcome all comments!
we've seen a few coming in from people who bought off the internet. Tires were so hard it made it difficult to mount, we warned the guys but I don't think they believed us. Now that the story is out maybe they will.
Car tires not motorcycle tires.
Also another good reason to buy DUNLAP they never stay in stock long enought to get aged
Dunalp is as close to just in time marketing as it gets.
I order most cycle tires from American Moto Tire and have never gotten one manufactured more than 6 months back. I have bought Metzlers, Avons, and Dunlops from them. The key is to check the date upon reciept and if the tire was manufactured more than 3 years ago, make them take it back. Most studies claim that tires less than 5-6 years back are OK, but I am picky with M/C tires. Not so much with car tires. BTW 0407 does mean manufactured on the 4th week of 07.
Dry rot in 9 months? Shoot I wore out 3 rear Metzlers and a front in 9 months last year. No time for dry rot.
im a Goodyear dealer. finding a new 10 year old tire is unheard of. we (as the USGVT trans dept) recc not driving on tires regardless of the condition after the 5 year mark. it is unsafe. if some one is selling 10 year old tires, its isolated, rare , unscrupulous, criminal and definitley on purpose. your average tire stores stock is going to rotate out in months if not every year or so.
as usual the news exaggerates and sensationalizes. now that being said i WOULD look closely at the dates on used tires as many new or near new spares end up in used tire racks as trade ins. THATS where you will find a great lookin 10 year old "new" tire.
Good call hands down there is no better tire for a Hd than Dunlap wear ,traction and quialty.
The name may not sound cool like some of the others or make sound like you have racing tires but there is none better.

I put two Metzler 880's on last year and in 9 months they were both dry rotted. Back to the Dunlops forevermore.
