I'm have chrome lowers put on at the same time that the inner fairing is getting painted by a custom shop. $450 for removing the fairing, painting, reinstall& the install of the lowers. Didn't think that was too bad considering dealership wants $520 for the painted fairing & cap alone.

Worth it? Absolutely, IMO. The dealer charged me 4 hours labor. Don't forget all the little bits and pieces as well...chrome spacers, axle end caps, the triple tree cover, etc.

Thumbs down for me. I'm not into any mod that doesn't enhance functionality.

A service manual and any knowlege of wrenching will save you the labor. I did mine a couple years ago...also added the chrome roto/caliper cover. No regrets. Plan on most of a Saturday to do it and yes you need a lift. Also you will need to get new fork seals and make a jig to get the seals in-out of the forks. I used a piece of pvc pipe cut in half-lenght wise. Saved the 200$ HD tool.
You will love the look of the chrome front end.

Bingo! I have a Road King so I didn't have to deal with the fairing, but this really is a pretty easy project. There are a couple of good pages that give some pretty in depth tutorials on this:

http://groups.msn.com/toddsharleypix...eforkswap.msnw

http://www.hotrodsbikeworks.com/tech...ent/index.html

It's a good way to get to know your bike. After you take the front end apart the first time you'll get a lot faster at it the second time (I decided to lower the front after putting on a new front wheel). There is plenty of help here on the forums (pm me personally) if you can't figure it out with the service manual and the above links. As far as is it worth it-I know it was for me:

a chrome front end is a must IMO. i had mine done over winter...will get pics on in couple weeks when i get camera. i went with a chrome exchange with the lowers and brake calipers then bought chrome cowbells. i think the calipers chromed really finishes off the front end.

I think the bikes need the chrome front end. It pisses me off that Harley doesn't sell them that way. Just another way to get more money.[:@]

+1. We spend 20K+ for a bike with no chrome. IMO, the bike should come chromed out for that price.
