I had a lot of problems when it had the Harley oil in it. Once I went with Mobil 1 the problem went away. Now it slides in like butter. I don't even have to look for the light. I just know it is there. I have since switched to Amsoil in the crankcase but will keep the Mobil in the tranny. It is smooth as silk.
IMHO its mostly practice and really getting a feel for it. Nine times out of ten I can stop at a light and pop it into neutral without even looking - you just know the feel and you can tell that its not in second (I always find mine by going up from first). I know not looking is not a best practice...now I've probably jinxed myself...ha! Very rarely I'll have to engage the clutch just slightly while in first to get a slight rotation if neutral is being difficult, but again its fairly rare this happens.
Thats kinda funny, I have better luck tapping up from first. Can NEVER hit it coming down from second. Mine got noticeably harder after the 1000 mile checkup, when it got changed to syn3 in the trans. And It got harder again after I added the IDS. (the only downside I've found to that mod)
I had the same problem with my 2000 FLHTCI. Be sure your primary chain is adjusted properly, then blip the throttle when you lift your foot shifter. Mine goes into neutral everytime now -- no problems.
While in first gear, just nudge the clutch lever enough to cause the bike to move slightly. Then click it into neutral. Worked every time for me on my old Evo RK, but my '07 SG goes in much easier.
