Default Maintenance Advice

Going to start doing my own oil changes. I have had dealer doing changes for 1000 & 5000mile. 9000 miles now, time to give her the fresh stuff. QUESTION: How are you guys removing the filter? Is a Special Wrench needed at the low,low local HD cost? OR can something be purchased at an auto store? As far as oils go...I'm not going to start another thread war, but...most seem to be running a syn 20W/50 inengine and primaryand 77w 90 in tranny? Dealer has been using Syn3 in all 3, but even one of the mechanics told me to get some heavy stuff for the tranny.

Here's what I use for the oil filter.

I just got one at the auto parts store.
If you have a chrome filter , you can put a piece of leather , rubber , or sandpaper in between for more grip.
Nice because your hands can be 12 - 18" away from the filter and get a cut off 2 liter bottle under the filter to ward off some of the mess.
I like amsoil 20w50 for the engine , amsoil severe gear for the trans , and harley trans fluid for the primary (just my preference).
A couple of harley O rings , and the service manual , torque wrench , and you're good to go.
I do a couple buddies bikes , and with their service manuals , we get them done pretty quick.
Good luck.
Mick

Replace it with a K&N. They have the end nut for easy removal in the future.

thanks, I was wondering if I should continue with the Harley filter or use something else. I like the chrome look, so I think I'll stick with harley. I have a service manual & a jack, so the job should go smoothly.

A lot of my discretionary money has disappeared with rising gas prices, so I'm doing my own maintenance now. Who can afford a few hundred dollars at the dealer's service department anymore? I bought a filter wrench from Drag Specialties and am about to buy my first torque wrench (to tighten up those "critical fasteners". It's a good way to spend a Friday night, and the confidence that I have from doing my own work - and knowing it's right - increases the enjoyment I have with the bike. But my wife thinks there is something wrong with a person that spends their nights reading the service manual.... I suppose I have to agree.
