I had a set of stock wheels plated at Chrome Pro also ($575.00 set) I ma very pleased with the pre-chrome work as well as the finished product. I really didn't have a choice in my situation because I have a 97 model and there are very few aftermarket wheels for a 97 RK. But I had to remove tires and bearings and then remount and install bearings.
You need to do some research Mack. The only advantage the factory would ever have is selecting which castings they plate and then save the junk for powder coating. Aside from picking their quality parts for plating the rest are done just a cheaply as possible. Thats the reason the backside of your pulley is probably rough and unpolished, The backsides of your lower legs still say showa and have the part number on them and your swingarm has all those nasty welds and cast finishes plated over because the did not want to spend the extra money polishing it completely.
After pricing the cost of chroming wheels, I went with HD Thunderstars on my 02 Dyna. Held up for last 3 years. So I just ordered 2 fronts (19 Sportster--16 Street Glide) in Thunderstars. With dealer discount, and 3 floating rotors to match, looking at a little under $1500.00. They come with bearings and rotors will bolt right on.
Just my choice after looking at over $600 per wheel (plus cost of additioanl wheel if I want to keep riding) plus all the bearings and instalation....... and since dealer through in free mounting since I purchased Metzlers, pretty much was choice for me.
Oh and by the way, it never really ends, since I am putting a chrome wheel on front of the Stret Glide with the big fenders, I ordered the Street Stalker fender from the 06 access book as they could still get painted fenders instead of primed or black (07 catalog). It needs the mounting kit for Fl bikes, but it should help show off the wheels.
Is there an end.....ya I guess when I stop breathing.
