well, at least it was easier than having to remove that pound and a half of useless iron. i hate heel shifters. you can find them anywhere. lots of guys remove them.
I have a drawer full of those things. First thing to go on a new bike. I took my wifes off a couple of bikes ago and she couldn't have been happier to get it off after catching her pants leg on it once and almost dropping the bike. My Opinion of course. I know some like them but can't understand why.
Took my heal shifter off, then got nerve damage to my left leg from a blown disk in my back, had to put it back on, now strong enough to use just the toe again, anyway on a trip to the grand canyon the spline stripped on the heal shifter making it drop to the floorboard, had just enough of the spline teeth left to make it miss gears when shifting, what a surprise when passing cars on the two laners.
Couldnt wait to take it off again.
Terry
P.S. The bolt holding it on was still tight it just striped out.
I've been riding since 1966, first ride on a bagger was in 97 when I test rode a 97 Ultra. Before the ride was over I had learned to use the heel shifter. I think it is the best thing since sliced bread. I have never kept my feet tucked in when riding as I find that uncomfortable so the issue of it being in the way is not a issue. I have floorboard extenders on now so it even less of a problem.
I removed my heel shifter on my 06 EGC the day I got it. Covered the shaft with a 2 cents worth of black rubber hose from Advance Auto that was the same size as the shaft. Actually, they just gave me 4 inches of hose and didn't even charge for me 1 cent LOL! I just brought home a new 09 Ultra yesterday. I'm undecided whether or not to do the same thing to it... I still have the leftover rubber hose I didn't use on the 06 Classic LOL!
A lot more room? If I were to remove the heel shifter and scoot my feet back and in to where it is I would think it would leave me feeling somewhat cramped. My feet usually hang out over the sides and front of my footboards not because there are things in the way but because it puts my feet/knees in a more comfortable position.I may order the extenders from harley goodies but the heel shifter stays on. I've been a fan since day one. I cant tell ya how many times I fought trying to find neutral with a toe shifter.
Took a nice ride over to a friends place Sunday. On the way home I took a back road to enjoy the less traveled route. Shifted with the heel shifter then put my feet up on the hi way pegs for 8 miles when I went to shift again my heel shifter was gone. I use my heel shifter all of the time so I just don't feel right without it. I hope my dealer will step up to the plate and warranty the shifter I have less than 3000 miles on the bike. I guess I will find out if they will warranty it today.
Funny azz thread here... seems there are a lot of heel shifters layin along the roads! Mine fell off the RKC once but I found it... could take it off wouldn't bother me one way or the other!
