Come on chaps - I'm not quite that dense. My manual seems to concentrate on the actual topping up procedure, showing pictures of the dipstick levels etc i.e one for when the bikes on its stand and one for a side car (straight up). It just says top up halfway on a cold engine. I'm at work just now but I'll check the detailed stuff at the back of the manual to see whether it gives a figure - but I think it'll just say the total capacity rather than a top up level.
Dude?
This is 1 assinine question, however...I feel compelled to help you out.
The correct amount of total oil capacity is 4 qts.
When changing oil there is usually 1/2 qt. left in the crankcase and other areas.
4 qts. - 1/2 qt. = 3 1/2 qts.
This is a simple item that ANY HD owner that wrenches on their bike SHOULD know!
Thanks for a helpful answer. I've read the manual again and as I thought it just mentions the total capacity, which as you say is 4 US quarts or 3.8 litres. All I wanted to know was what it requires to go from the lower level on the dipstick to the halfway level on the dipstick - i.e is it 1.75 US quarts (half of your figure 3.5 quarts) ?
What amount of oil is needed to bring the level up to halfway from low when cold and on the jiffy stand on a 2008 Road King ?
Not sure about the 08"s but on the older models if you fill it to the top when cold, you may be overfilled when hot. Follow the procedure in the owner's manual.
