Newbie here.
If Lilburn isn't too far for you, take a look at Stn Mtn H-D. They'll help you with your questions.
Bought my 08 Ultra there 5 weeks ago and have nothing but good things to say about them.
When you get yours, come up to Duluth and we'll do some riding.

- Fat Boy was one model that you mentioned. I agree that it looks great, but you also said you want to spend a few MONTHS touring the gulf coast. You're going to need some luggage to do that, and you don't get any with a Fat Boy.
- Heritage Classic is basically the same bike as a Fat Boy, but with the addition of a windshield, leather saddle bags, passing lamps and spoked wheels instead of mag rims. Equipment like this will work pretty good for touring, but then you'd still be riding on a Softail frame which is not nearly as good as the Touring suspension. I owned a Heritage last year, and on our bumpy Canadian roads I would often bottom out the suspension, giving me a good jolt in the back. (Disclosure: I could stand to lose a "few pounds" myself, so maybe bottoming out on the Softail isn't as common for others as it was for me. But I noticed a HUGE improvement in ride quality when I switched to a Road King.)
- Road King would give you the Touring frame and suspension. Now yer talkin' for putting on some major miles. And if you like to keep things basic, this would be a fine choice. You get hard saddle bags, but if you need a lot of luggage room (MONTHS on the road?) you might want to purchase the tour pack which is fairly pricey. And there's no radio on a Road King, although after market options are available. If you don't need luggage room or a radio, then get the RK. Otherwise...
- Electra Glide Classic would give you the Touring frame and suspension, hard bags, tour pack, radio... you'd be good to hit the highway and only come home in autumn!! I'm suggesting the EG Classic, because the EG Standard doesn't have the tour pack or radio, and the EG Ultra adds extra cost to features you may not be interested in (such as fairing lowers, which may not be of much use to you in the warmth of the Southern USA.)
Anyway, best of luck with your decision. I'm sure you'll make a great choice which ever way you decide to go.
Happy trails!
