The wireless throttle got stuck on my 08 Classic. The rpm was around 2,100 rpm and would not go back to the idle setting of around 1,000 rpm. I took the bike immediately to the dealer and they had to reprogram the computer back to factory specifications. The very same thing happened about a week later and back to the dealer again. The bike was immediately taken into the shop. There was a new Ultra in the shop for the same issue. The dealercalled Harley Davidson and was informed that to get the factory specified idle it is necessary to cycle the switch off and on 4 times. Make sure that the injectors fully cycle before shutting off and cycling again. We did the off and on 4 times and back to the factory setting of around 1,000 rpm. The dealer did take my name and will call me ASAP when the fix is provided by Harley.
Now get this. When they called Harley Davidson they said the high idle was caused by the customer, which I thought was a crock. It is unfortunatate a large company can't take responsibility for something THEY did. Harley Davidson stated there is going to be a fix out but did not have a date. Since they are aware of this SERIOUS issue I would think it would be a HIGH priority and would have a date(It is computer issue). I have been riding for 40 years so this was not a big deal for me. A new rider could have had a serious problem and this situation is potentially dangerous.
So, if this happens to you at least your ride does not have to be screwed up as the racing of the engine can be fixed by 4 flicks of the ignition. I would imagine this will happen again to me until Harley can get the fix to the dealers.
Ride much and be safe.
Your high idle was caused by YOU.....
when you hit the kill switch or turned the ignition off....you have the throttle grip in some position other than at the nuetral position....in other words you had the throttle twisted.......
When you shut the engine down the ECM reads the postion of the throttle for next start up.....looking at your post and 2100 rpm.....that is where you had the throttle input when you shut it down.....
the service manual also outlines the procedure to reset the idle when YOU mess it up.
There should be a new calibration coming soon to take this reading with some delay after shutting down...but the guys who set there and play with thier throttle will have the same problem.
and it is not a wireless throttle...it is a cableless throttle.
Actually it might have been caused by you. The story I am hearing is that if you have your bike idled up when you shut it down, that is what causes the high idle problem. The computer takes the throttle position at time of shut down as the idle rate. Cycling the on / off switch 4 times resets it to the default position.
I find it hard to believe some of you would blame it on the rider/owner. Reeedickulous!! I can turn my throttle to WFO and shut off the bike then start it back up and it won't try and kill me.
Stupid if you ask me and even more stupid for some to defend the MOCO on this garbage.
I did it to mine on pupose just to see what all the fuss was about when I read about it previously.
Easy fix to cycle the ignition.
Its easy to see why it happens, On my Heritage I would sometimes blip the throttle just for grins as I pulled into teh garage and hit the kill switch...If I do that on the ultra a couple of times it raises the idle setting.
Does anyone know what it would take to switch the TBW system back to a cable system? I only run a single cable on my shovel but believe it is safer than this.I plan on buying a new roadking next spring but ever since HD came out with this system I have never liked the idea.I know corvettes and fighter jets have these systems but on any of my bikes I want a certain reliability that is tried and true. Thanks in advance

RE: Stuck throttle on 08 Classic-CAUTION
If your idle speed jumps up to ~1800 rpm like it did on my bike, how is this dangerous if you know how to competently operate a motorcycle? What would you do if the throttle stuck on your manual transmission-equipped car, something that happened to me plenty of times as a kid with the junker cars I owned? Pull in the clutch lever and the "killer" situation is eliminated.
P.S.- TBW stand for Throttle By Wire. It's not "wireless" as erroneously described above.
