08 ultra
problems,,,, yup....... "married with children,!!!!"
as far as Slip On's vs TD's....
I suggest, depends where you are ,, if your area is crakin down on EPA,NOISE...
dont spend the $ on TD's
I have only added slipons,,, alls FINE!
6,000 miles
Ok, I have built afew fuel injected hot rods over the eyars and here is the story on the heat. With fuel injection it is possible to set a motor to run at a stoichmetric air fuel mixture which is 14.7:1. This is the theoretical cleanest and most efficiant mixture for an internal combustion engine, and also produces the most heat as a by-product of increased burn efficency. If emissions are not a consideration, you want your motor to run stoichmetric at cruise, but ONLY at cruise. You want to fatten up the mixture to run around 13.8 at idle, and somewhere between 13.5 - 14.3 under load ( this one depends a lot on cam, compression, timing, and flow ). What the MoCo did to avoid putting catalytic converters on the bikes was to run stoichmetric at idle hence giving the cleanest burn ( it appears they also choked the flow a bit to help out with emissions ). All it is going to take to make this motor run "cool" ( remember there are a lot of cubes sitting there ) is to open up the flow, then remap the A/F to fatten up the idle, and in order to increase power, fatten up the under load condition. Now there are also some timing issues that come into play, but that gets a little more complicated and is where a dyno can really help out.
The motor itself is sound and Harley knows that folks are going to want to make the changes to get there bikes to run better and cooler, hence the SE options, but to meet the goverments requirements they had to either set the A/F the way the bikes are now or run cats which would totally change the way the bikes sound.
Hope this helps clarify things a little,
Harry
The 08 Ultra is a great bike in all regards - strong, surprisingly agile, and made to run long miles with comfort. Brakes are excellent, ABS a option to definitely pick. Sounds good with the right pipes too.
And pssst - personally, I always use the kill switch - I don't believe THAT is the cause of the high-idle problem people discuss - mis-applying throttle when shutting off is.
Love the ABS, they've saved my behind more than once with these idiot's that drive around here.
**(only one hitch in the Navy, 3 yrs/4 mos, in the 60s, and I think I'd've enjoyed life more if I'd have stayed longer)**
