For me the right one went on fairly easy, but had the same problem with the left side...no way was that piece of velcro anywhere near the frame rail. Then I put the seat on and the seat must have bent the the left shield just right to get the velcro to the frame. I think the biggest problem is that the left side shield is bent way wrong for the 08s. If you push the corner with brass eyelit under the plastic wiring channel cover directly across from the brass eyelit on the right side shield and the back of the left shield more or less aligned between the side cover and header pipe...then just put the seat on and see what happens.
I found them to be about like anything else made like it is. There is some manipulating you have to do to get them perfect. Took me about 30 minutes to get mine just right, but no problem.
Nothing like the guys trying to get the Tour Pak rack lined up within 1/32 of and inch. Only then to see a pic in the catalog and see it on backwards.
I had the same problem.
Me and the HD mechanic couldn't get mine to fit and yes we rasied the tank.
I gave up.
I'm close to giving up also. Spent another half hour trying everything I can think of and the stuff you guys suggested. Don't want to try and bend the piece to much or they may say I ruined them. I know these things have a great reputation but I think the manufacture missed the design boatfor the 2008 touring models.
Spoke with a friend that put them on his Softail. Said it was a piece of cake. He came over to install them for meand left with some cake on his face after giving up.......
Knightrider.. Put these on my 08 SG and the bike runs cooler and better..!! about 100 dollars, can't sneeze at that.. (no more worries about the rear cylinder overheat issue.)
Pasted from website:
The XiED is the preferred upgrade by most riders. The richer fuel mixture provides better heat reduction and improved performance. Nightrider's unique "patent pending" design to quickly and simply improve the closed loop fuel mixture on your TC96/103/110 engine from 14.6:1 to 13.8:1. This results in cooler exhaust temperatures. Recommended for stock bikes and those with upgraded exhaust or intake
RJ is a Great Guy.. I left a message one day and the very next day he called back.. RJ's Orig made summer riding better.. Living in the desert of So Cal we hit 126+ on most summer days... These have really saved my thighs and has made it better for the wife &\\; grand kids~~
He does now have a up-grade for installation for the '08's
Did you get them on?
If not, let me know and I'll send you a bunch of photo's of mine. It was driving me crazy to RJ called and walked me through it.
