I have the same problem on my 07, I noticed it last weekend. It only happened a couple times in stop and go traffic when I'd pull the clutch in. I was rippen hot, mid 90' and I was 2-up at the time. I've been back out a couple times and haven't heard a thing since. beats me??
Had the same problem. It sounded like the chain tensioner had failed. Took it in and they had the bike for two weeks, went completely through the primary, clutch, comp, sprocket, chain tensioner, they couldn't find a thing wrong. I was in the shop when they pulled the cover and drained the oil. Everything looked good and tight, no shavings in the oil. I asked about the comp. sprocket and they said if the bolt had come loose it would make a loud knocking sound even at idle. Good people to work with, told me to bring it back if it got any worse. Have no idea what it is. Two mechanics rode the bike and both said it was a little noisy but wasn't overly concerned. 08 Road King with 2300 miles. Guess we'll see what happens.
Oops. Sorry about that. Had it in last Monday. The tech took it out and could not get it to make the noise. The service manager did the same. Luckily he was there when I took it in the first time and he heard the noise. Well he couldn't get it to do it either. So when I picked it up I tried and I couldn't get it to do it either. So apparently what ever it was fixed itself. Maybe the tensioner was stuck and unstuck itself.
2008 RG \\;\\\\\\;
I took the RG in today for the 5K service and a few other problems.
I told them about the noise in the primary area when the clutch is let out quickly.
Got a call back from the service Mgr. the Compensating Sprocket was loose and may have done more damage will know later.
Stay tuned for more action. \\; Clutch basket was also loose.  \\;  \\;  \\;  \\;  \\;  \\; Retorqued everything.
Last update. \\; 06-21-08  \\; \\; Now have 7,500 mile on it no more noise seems OK.
