as noted above.... US 129 far southwest corner os NC far southeast corner of TN... look for either Maryville TN, or Robbinsville NC.
Cherahola, Nantahala, and foothills parkways are also great roads in the area. Current LEO crackdown has \\;cause most of the testosterone challenged to seek thrills elsewhere, but I agree... Tuesday through Thursday mornings are the best time... hot rods are still sleeping, and traffic is light....
There are dozens of roads in the area as challenging and technicl as the "dragon" it's just the "dragon" has the press.
Just one note of caution... it could be blazing hot... or nutmumbing cold, you just \\;never know, and forecasts are likely to change
Just rode the tail last Monday. It's recommended to ride Mon, Tues, or Wed which has the least amount of crotch rockets. We rode up and down. On the way down, two Harleys had hit head on. Also on the way down, I saw a crotch rocket pass a Harley on the inside of a turn. Just ride to your ability.
I've ridden it solo and two-up, enjoyed it both times. \\;\\\\\\; Been passed by the sport bike guys a few times, I just took a peek in the mirror when I could to watch for them and then pull over a little and wave them by. \\;\\\\\\; I've had no trouble and I've only been there on the weekends. \\;\\\\\\; The key, as has been said, is to ride your own pace, ride within your limits and don't worry about who's behind you. \\;\\\\\\; What works for me is to put it in 2nd gear and leave it. \\; Let the engine do some of the braking. \\; It helps me get onto a rythym and keeps me from getting too fast. \\; Hell, the speed limit is 30mph.
To me, it's worth it to go on a weekend to see the bike show at the store.
