I have used an automotive dent puller (slide hammer with a screw on the end) to get out freeze plugs.

In an engine block you can also tap on one side of the freeze plug with a punch and spin it in the hole. \\; Then grab the plug with a pair of channel locks and pull it out. \\; I don't know how well this would work in your case.
i got it out, used a puller...she ran the same i guess...not enough to notice...but then again she has a V&\\;H propipe on her now (both setups w/pc3) and i still dont notice that much of a difference
