Default RE: Check Engine Light1998 Classic

Thank you im...
&nbsp\\;
I&nbsp\\;am certain&nbsp\\;the air box is stock, no fuel management. The mufflers may be aftermarket. Not sure which brand. Or they could be HD, punched out. I have not dug that deep yet. They are much louder than stock. No farts or burps on intitial start up.
Could I set off a code by not waiting for the engine light to go out prior to start up?

waiting or not waiting for for the check engine light before starting on this bike has more to do with fuel pump pressure build-up..unless it stumbles significantly you should not get a code do to a bad start-up...a fart or burp from bike upon start-up will give a code #56....i like to wait untill it goes out..but i never rush when on the bike..
-the mufflers/ or slip-ons&nbsp\\; are easy to ID as Harley&nbsp\\; because&nbsp\\; thay are labeled as such....if original&nbsp\\; very, very likely punched out...lean..decel pop, white/white spark plugs..you will need a fuel management device..power commander or other....you can self install..If possible check on throttle side of bike..hole below timing cone..were your right foot rests..look at hole&nbsp\\; were cam position sensor exits..any goo looking stuff looks like that hard as nails caulk...if yes that is cam position sensor&nbsp\\; dieing.....my bike has been very reliable, and most posts mention the same...problems seem to come when people start to mess with performance??? add ons..stick with slip-on mufflers/slightly altered original maybe a K and N filter replacement for standard airbox and self install fuel management&nbsp\\; and you will get a long ride...the cam position sensor and the temp. sensor are the two most common replacement parts...and both are do it yourself items with simple tools.....not bad for a 10 year old bike...enjoy your bike

3.turn ignition key switch to ignition and wait about 8 seconds for a bunch of flashing of the check engine light
it will then stop for 2 seconds..get ready... these are the codes you must count:
it will slowly flash 1,2,3,5....there is NO 4....this is the first digit of the 2 digit code ..so it can only be 1,2,3,5 &nbsp\\; __ __
then a 2 second pause...then you will get second digit of the 2 digit code..it can only be 1,2,3,4,5,6
remember after the complete 2 digit code is given you will go back to the rapid flash sequence..
there are a total of 15 codes available with this procedure
examples
52,53,54,55 bad news ECM replacement
56 crank/cam sensor
11 throttle sensor
12 barometric
23 and 32 are injectors front/rear
24 coil
33 fuel pump relayin this case you would not hear the pump but instead waited 3 seconds after the on / off sequence
*
in order to erase any codes you must disconnect the battery or wait for 50 on and off riding cycles
I have a 1999 FLHRCI with Magnetti-Morelli. Can you provide me with the rest of the codes. Symptom: Starts fine, runs a minute or so, then just quits. thnx, Les

There can be a 4. I recently pulled codes 42 (cam position sensor) and 56 (cam and crank position sensor) off my 00 twin cam

Hey....I'm new to the forum, researching a check engine light issue, came across your post. Long shot: do you still have the '98? If not, do you still have the service manual you mentioned later in this thread?

Hope this gets to you, I know your post was a LOOOONG time ago.

Mike
