Couple of weeks ago I was out riding on a windy day. As I was sitting in the middle lane about to turn into Wal-Mart, the wind shifted direction and blew my freakin windshield off across two lanes of traffic!! My question is how do I prevent this from happening again? Do those little curly clips actually do anything? WTF???
Sounds like it wasn't seated in the rubber grommets correctly or they're worn out and won't hold the windshield in. Check them out and see if they're worn.

And no......those clips don't do anything.
if a strong enough wind hits it on the back side, it'll blow off
 \\;
winds \\;gotta be pretty strong though with you being on the bike blocking it
or the shield is real loose. Like already said, the clips do nothing but give you a finger grab (useless really)
