hi i am new here and planing to buy a new bike next year right now i ride metric but think i will go harley ultra or king \\;on the next one.
 \\; i have been told that the 88's have more power than the 96's due to epa regs. just wondering \\;if its true ??? \\; \\;
I have a 06 street glide 88. 1 of my riding buddys has a 08 road king 96. we both have slip ons with power commander and stage 1. we are dead even. i just installed a screamin eagle heavy breather and a 2-1 lsr today and can tell already i will be faster than the old set up. i'm getting it tuned this week, not dynoed, tuned, it should run even faster and get better mileage. we'll see. good luck on your new purchase.
Someone BS ing you I own both and the 96 will flat out kick the 88's butt.
Now the 88 evo is a fine engine but so is the 96

I own an 88" and performance wise it is equal in acceleration with my friends 96". If I was you I would buy a 96" as HD has improved the internals of the motor a lot over the years.
If you are looking for power a 88 with the big bore 95 kit will blow the doors off a 96....buy smart and once you decide on what you want the bike for and what you want for performance there is a lot of advice on this forum. If you want the straight goods on the best year to buy as well as performance mods talk to an independent that has been in the business for awhile. If you build a relationship with the indy he will point you towards a well maintained bike \\;that one of his customers is selling......that way he knows he will get your future business by making a good recommendation.
I traded an 05', 88" EG classic on my 08', 96" SG and speed may be the same, but hands down the 96 has far more torque. The 96" is a stroked 88" with a larger throttle body for increased fuel.
