My money is on an adjustable pushrod loosening up. Had it happen on my 89 after doing a top end.
I agree I forgot to mention when I went to Fla. last winter I had to adjust my push rods again as one in the front cyl. the exhaust loosened up and started rapping...I just went over them one afternoon and readjusted them all for my own peace of mind...
Yeah, I checked my pushrod adjustments a couple of months ago just to be sure everything was set right. \\; They were right on when I finished, and I tightened the locknuts, made sure of that. \\; I didn't use any loctite, but maybe I should have. \\; Didn't see it in the instructions. \\; Still waiting to hear from the dealership. \\; Hopefully that's all it was.

Please don't let any loctite get anywhere near your pushrods.....
Ain't nothing wrong with putting locktite on them if you don't plan on taking them out again. \\;\\\\\\; \\;\\\\\\; After having one of mine come loose, \\;\\\\\\; I put locktite on them.
Never use Loctite unless you want to use bolt cutters the next time you want to adjust your pushrods. Just make sure that you use good quality wrenches that fit tight and tighten them up using good judgment. Any time that I adjust pushrods I will button the bike up and go for a 10 or 15 minute ride and then pop off the tubes and check them again.

More than likely a lifter failed.

Just picked up the bike from Central HD in Olathe, KS. \\; Yep, it was the adjustable pushrod on the front cylinder intake valve WHEW! \\; They reset it and checked the others and I'm good to go again. \\; They said it is not uncommon for adjustable pushrods to come loose whether they've been tightened or not, so (lesson for all of us) if you hear some tapping that you don't think you've heard before and you have adjustable PR's, I'd recommend you check them. \\; They told me it's good to check them every now and then, whether you hear tapping or not. \\; Also said not to put loctite on them, as has been said, although I agree with what others said that it probably wouldn't hurt, even if you had to snap them out and put in new ones for $100. \\; Anyway, bike runs great and I'm a happy camper.
