I saw a screw in my front tire and rode to my Harley shop.
I was shocked when they said the company wouldn't let them fix (patch it).
They could only replace the tire.
 \\;
I replaced the tire but wasn't happy.
But then I wouldn't be happy with a bad patch job, out on a loney a$$ road in this Texas summer heat either.
 \\;
Good money or bad, I now have a new tire anyway.
For the record (if anyone cares) I didn't feel screwed by the dealer. \\; I'm glad they found the screw (which they showed me still embedded in the tire). \\; I'm \\;OK not going the tube or patch route, as that's one less thing to worry about down the road. \\; I'm even OK with $300 parts and labor for a new tire - sounds reasonable enough given I wasn't about to change it myself.
 \\;
No...I felt screwed by the SCREW. \\; That's what really sucked!!!
 \\;
I guess I shot an airball on this post.
The lawyers won't allow a motorcycle tire to be repaired by an honest dealer - too much liability involved - blame the lawyers, not the dealers. \\; Putting a tube under a tubeless tire generates too much heat, another bad option. \\; A plug is only a temporary fix - unless you never drive over 45 or so, I wouldn't trust one. \\; An inside patch is best if you can find someone to do it.  \\;
I picked up a screw on the front at 1200 miles or so. \\;\\\\\\; Rummaged through the tool box and stuck a plug in it. \\;\\\\\\; 10.5k on the clock now. \\;\\\\\\; \\;\\\\\\; \\;\\\\\\; I think the plug held. \\;\\\\\\;
I've been plugging MC and car tires for decades and never had a problem as long as the hole isn't on or near the sidewall. I have one in my front tire that's been there for 15k miles or more. Suggestions that plugging is temporary and that plugged tires need to be swapped for new tires ASAP is bogus, IMO.
If your life isn't worth more than $300 then go ahead and plug or put a tube in. I've read too many articles from MC tire manufacturers that state any fix on a tire is temporary at best. Its not just Harley dealers that won't repair a tire, I've seen the same at Yamaha dealers, and a good shop would never fix a punctured tire and let you ride away on it. Either do it yourself and risk your own life or buy a new one. I know the stories about repaired tires lasting for thousands of miles, but the odds of a major failure at the worst possible time are way higher. I just can't imagine why someone would want to scrimp and save on such a critical part.
