For those who did it, are cams worth the money? It was recomended that I change out the stock oil pump on my 08 at the same time as cams. He said factory oil pump is garbage, and aftermarket pump will get lots more oil thru engine and also help it run cooler.
I was thinking about cams alone but decided to wait till I could do the heads also, and I thought the new bikes already had an improved oil pump from the factory.
I have an 05 and if you're going to do cams, you may as well do a high volume oil pump, feuling or SE cam plate, and timken bearings. You've already got the improved cam chain design, so unless you really want it, you don't really need to go to gear driven cams. However, a pair of S&S or Andrews cams will get more power to your rear wheel.
Honestly I don't think they are. If I had to do it over I would just stick in the stocker. Reason why I did change out my cam was I had to repair the cam chain tensioner and other peripherial parts that exploded at 35,000 miles. While they were in there my mech recommended that I do it, so I did. I put in a SE 257 cam.
One thing very noticible was a decrease of MPG's even thought I had the bike dyno'd and my TFI box adjusted to get the maximum benefit of performance, ridability and MPG's. What it all comes down to is what you want out of the bike and what your willing to give up. If you do decided to re-cam your bike get a gear driven set. Your call and good luck!!
I just had TW6-6 cams put in mine for $850. It was dyno tuned back in the spring on a cool day with low humidity. After cams re tuned on a 95 dg F day with high humidity. Not a fair comparison but, gained 6 hp and 2 Ft lbs torque. The bike is smoother and stronger, More than the dyno numbers indicate.
New oil pumps are not garbage. No need to change out an oil pump on an 08 unless there is something wrong with it. I do thinks cams are worth the money. I did a bolt in cam for a 96" in with no headwork and am happy. I did buy a cam that would work with a 103 or even a 110 so when I go 103 I don't need to get a different cam.
