The Amsoil guys rave about the stuff because it is a pyramid deal.........they make moolah when they get other people to buy it. Is it good stuff? Of course. Is it a magic bullet that makes makes your bike last longer, run quieter, ride smoother, go faster? Ummmmm......maybe, but anyone can say that about Mobil 1, SYN3, and countless others out there. Just follow the Harley recommended specs and change intervals and all will be good.
30K on an '07 ??? Mine has 23K, and I thought I rode alot.
russl, I have lifter noise too, but it has always been noisy. Can't imagine backfiring being an oil issue. Sounds more like a tuning issue. What kinds of starting problems? Won't start? Hard starting? With 30K, it MUST start once in a while! lol.
With 30K on the bike, isn't your warranty expired? Or did you buy an extended warranty?
Can't believe they would tell you such an outright lie. I beleve I would be moving down the road to another dealer not one so full of crap, especially if they say you need new cams and lifters because you are using Amsoil.
Synthetic oil is the best oil you can get for any engine. Someone needs to let the dealer know they don't have a clue about what they are saying!
The service manager asked me about Amsoil in my bike , mine is ready today after a complete engine rebuild, it blew up at 6100 miles. He told me he has seen it before and it was on a bike that the owner demanded the use of Amsoil.
I have used it for over twenty years, both bikes I've owned has had engine issue, WTF
I was in a meeting with a Amsoil rep in the 70's who sponsered a late model race car and the engine wear proof I saw made me believe that it was the best there is.
After it not helping me in my 07 96 and after installing it twice in 6100 miles , I don't know what to think............I plan to believe that my 07 96 was a lemon and the oil is world class.
If you go to AMSOIL's web site you can download an indy study that compares all the popular brands. In some of the tests AMSOIL is not #1 but the over all results in all the test places it on the top.
Very interesting story...I just started using Amsoil based on all the independent testing showing superior anti-wear results so I would obviously be curious as to what caused you early excessive wear.
the testing is not exactly 'independent', but i'm not going to tell you that the oil is no good. any oil that meets the spec required is good oil. some may be better than others, but i kinda liken it to the high jump guy. if the bar is at 3 feet, it doesn't matter if he can jump 6 feet or 10, he's still gonna clear the bar.
i do agree with the others that say to run quickly from that dealer. i highly doubt that the oil caused your problems. unless you just plain used the wrong oil.
i personally don't use amsoil, and i have my reasons, but if you choose to, i would not tell you that the oil is crap.
i am a amsoil dealer also and that is typical harley bs the truth is harley syn is made by
citgo the cheapest crap in the world i have used amsoil for years in my motorcycles and
cars all my biker buddies use amsoil in all three holes 20/50 motor and primary and 75/90
sevear gear in the tranny riuns cooler quiet and shifts smoother-ride safe
The frequency of oil change coupled with filter change is the key thing. Todays oil are far superior to those of 20 years ago. You can use just about any oil with the right viscosity and get good results. How do I know?? Because my evo has over `145k miles with no teardown, runs strong, does not smoke and cranks every time. It doesn't use oil between changes either. Wanna know what I use???? Castrol GTX A car oil......changed every 2500 miles ......$2.38a qt at Walmart. Again the frequency of change is the thing, keep it clean and a fresh filter and it will last. My buddy had 238k on his before needing a rebuild...again with Castrol GTX
