Default Interesting Discussion about AMSOil

My bike, an 07 FLHTC, has 30K. I was having some problems with engine noise, backfiring, and starting. I was told that the lifters and may be the cams need to be replaced...all warranty work. The parts manager at my dealership told me that the possible cause of this is the fact I am using AMSOIL. He said AMS was tested using automobile variables, and was not tested using motorcycles. Therefore, it is not a "true" motorcycle oil. I said that it was stated on the package that it is for V-TWIN motorcycles. He said that is because they want to sell the product. The dealership sells AMS. So, if it is bad, why do they sell it? Have any of you heard this stuff about AMS. I have been using AMS since 15K and change the oil every 5K.

Very interesting story...I just started using Amsoil based on all the independent testing showing superior anti-wear results so I would obviously be curious as to what caused you early excessive wear.

My 08 RKC is my first HD and I'm still having trouble getting past all the mechanical noise, I rode Japanese bikes for 35 years and there silent by comparison.

The parts manager is an idiot. You could use diesel oil in there, as long as it was the correct viscosity, and there's nothing they could do about it. Are they threatening you with claim denial? Google the Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act.

+1 Drew. Amsoil is fine. I've run it in my Hogs - 20W50 synthetic standard or the mysterious "V-Twin" formula synthetic. Run it in my primary, too. I know guys who run the same in all three, but I prefer the Amsoil 75W50 gear oil in my tranny. Works fine, and my dealer told me it's one of two brands that's okay to use.

Any oil that meets the specs as outlined in your owners manual is OK to use. It's not brand specific.

BTW........I use SYN3 only because I can use it in all 3 holes and it's available everywhere. Incidently, I have never heard of an engine failing because the wrong brand of oil was used.

+2 I've been using AMSOIL for YEARS - Still another BS Story... And people think that the people that work in a Harley Dealership are trained on HD equipt??? Not!!! You'll find more Indep. Shops that have far more experience in HD.

Been selling Amsoil for a long time and people rave about it. I agree, the person you spoke to is incorrect. Most bikes run a little cooler, smoother. On metrics they shift better and their rear gear oil is one of the best on the market.

Been running Amsoil since 99 without any problems. Good stuff, I like it.
