Thinking about moving up to a touring class bike from my superglide. In looking at the options I am curious about the differences between a Road king and an Electraglide standard besides the obvious full faring. The Electraglide is less expensive. How do they compare? Thanks
Personally I like the openess of the Road King. I've never driven anything with a fairing, but it seems like it would cut down on the visibility. With that being said, I had the same question you have when I was purchasing. Here's what I noticed. Although the EG Standard has the full fairing, it doesn't have a radio and the mirrors are typical, not like the Street Glide or Ultra's mirrors. Also, the EG Standards that I looked at had a motor that looked pretty dull. The Road King has a black/chrome motor where I think the EG Standard has just a polished motor, but I could be wrong. Both have auxillary lights and passenger floor boards. Neither has a tour pack. As far as seat height and other specs, check the HD site.
I have an 08 EGS and like it a lot. I was concerned about the visibility you lose with the fairing, but it's really a non-issue. I'll admit that the lower price was a consideration in getting the EGS but also I could afford to get any bike I wanted. The engine is not a shiny as the other touring models but it doesn't really bother me. I kind of like the more industrial look to the engine. Also, the sales guy said, and I've heard this from others, the the aluminum powder coated engine runs cooler. I guess I could see that, reflecting heat better. I like having the tach with the EGS, also. I will ride in fairly low temps and the batwing will be good for that, especially on the hands. I have a set of chromed lowers for the bike as well and they really cut the wind off the legs which will help in the cooler temps. I think the batwing give your bike a little more visibility, more visual width, in daylight to other drivers so I see it as better from a saftey point of view as well. You can get good wind protection on the RK, so it really comes down to what you like in terms of looks. I've always liked the batwing look.
Looking at the '09s on HD's site it seems both the EG standard and RK are $16,999. Also the new Standard looks to have a more "finished" looking engine than it used to.
I was being pressured by the dealer and a couple others to go with the EGS also but went with the RK. I really like not having the windshield on the bike most of the time. Much of what can be done to one can be done to the other also. You can even get a removable "bat wing" for the RK if you want the best of both worlds.
It really comes down to what "style" you're going for as both bikes are going to ride pretty much the same with the slight differences of the fairing.
You really can't go wrong either way though if you think about it.
Get the Electra Glide Classic, you'll want the radio and tourpack if you're going to take a trip on it.
I had a 99 FLHT and a 2005 FLHTI. Both bikes got HD radios, hard lowers, and trunks with removeable brackets.
Now that I'm getting an '09, I ordered the FLHTC. For the price of the radio and trunk, I'm also getting more chrome, front fender fru-fru, bags rails, etc. I was even thinking of getting an Ultra since I add hard lowers; however that would mean too many presidents for me.
I like the internet HD dealers that sell parts for 20% off with no tax. The dealer in Baltimore offered 11% off if I join his shopping club for $39.95. Not.
I went with the FLHT. I wanted a radio. For around $500 you can get a really nice radio and install it your self in about 1.5hrs. For the RK, if you want tunes, it is about $1500 or so depending on which after market set up you go with. As for visibility with a bat wing, I am 5"8" and have the solid 4" black windshield and have no problems. Not to mention, every HD you see up in my neck of the woods is an RK... I wanted to be different ...
That was a really good post Ajay. I am also considering trading in my RKC for a Batwing bike, but I think you really have to look at them in person. One of the reasons I like the RK is for the chrome. The EG Standard has more of a brushed looked on the engine instead of chrome. So I decided against the standard only for that reason. If you don' t mind that then I think the EGS is the best deal out there. I'm now looking at Ultras, but they are pricey.
