The compensator sprocket bearing has a split inner race that requires proper compression. Deviation from the following procedure may lead to premature bearing failure.

17. Holding weld nut on lefty side of axle, proceed as follows:
a. tighten cone nut to 95-105 ft lbs
b. loosen cone nut one full turn
c. retighten cone nut to above specification

It is also in the instructions for installing on the 07's.

Am I missing something here? I thought he compensator sprocket and the IDS bearing are two totally different pieces?

That's the first I heard of a 95-105 ft lbs of torque being recommended. It was 80 in a factory advisory. Seems the torque is the root problem. Mine is doing fine after a rough start. Still have four more years of warranty so I ain't worried.

Default UPDATE (minor)

Yep, installed by dealer and about 3600 miles later, the same tech that did the original install wrote up this new service ticket to fix it. There is no charge though so +1 for Palm Bay HD on that (-1 for not orderinig the part before Fay hit last week though - looooooong delay now).

Been looking through some similar IDS bearing threads and one post taught me that the bearing installed for an '07 retro-fit is different from '08 bearing due to new axles in '08. Makes me wonder....

Read it again. The 95-105ft. lbs is referring to the CONE NUT on the axle, NOT the compensator bowl bolts.

No problem here at all with mine. SMOOoooooth sailing.

A final update….
After all the delays (tropical storm Fay, part order, etc.) the bearing got replaced with no charge even though the 90 day default warranty on parts had expired (good dealers cover the work they performed). However, I received no info to share regarding a cause of the failure – sorry.

An incidental note to add….
The tech accidentally scratched one of my saddlebags but that was also repaired free. This caused even more delay but **** happens and the paint repair is invisible – perfect workmanship.

Bottom line….
I got extremely frustrated by delays but in the end, my dealer did an outstanding job. My thanks go to Palm Bay HD (just south of Melbourne, FL).
