Don't know for sure what has happened but I can see that the outermost dust shield is sheared with about 1 inch or so of the thing sticking out. It made an intermittent but pronounced "klack" at low speed and no load but for some reason was quiet at speed. Pulled over, popped off the L/H saddlebag, and there is was - broken end twisted up a little but sticking out far enough to whack against the swingarm once in a while.
I can't feature the dust cover snaping all by itself so I guess there's some sort of hard bearing failure too. It's under warranty so we'll see and I'll update later next week.
I'll try to get one tomorrow when I'm dropping it off at the dealer. In case I can't, (and if I'm correct that this is a like some needle bearings I've seen), the shield is a narrow steel washer looking thing that is real skinny and just fits into the bearing cup - between the rollers and a machined ridge in the bearing cup.
I think the idea is to keep lube in and dirt out. Hopefully someone here on the forum knows more than I do and I'll know more soon myself but that's what it looks like to me anyway.

I've been following this issue closely and I've noted that virtually all the IDS failures involve those retrofitted on 2007 models while the 2008 factory-installed units have been rock-solid reliable. To me, this indicates either some yet to be identified incompatibility or improper installation. I hope they get to the bottom of it for you.
Hmmm...I wonder if this is why they put this little note in the '08 manual..
The compensator sprocket bearing has a split inner race that requires proper compression. Deviation from the following procedure may lead to premature bearing failure.
