Yeah you have a point, but I still plan on raising hell at the service dept. The primary cover would definitely need to come off because there is just no room to fish it out.

Do what asuperheat said...It does not look you have passenger floor boards on, so you just need to take the front floor board off...then the primary cover off...If you have a clean can drain the oil in that threw the drain plug...take the cover off very carefully look for nut...it is possible that they took the cover off to look at your chain tensioner...if that is so then the gasket could easily be reused (being it only has 50 miles on it) if you do not tear it taking the cover off...

I have done this practice several times over looking for my best clutch set up...as a matter of fact I still have a primary cover gasket that I have reused at least 4 times now and I have no leaks at all...I am not encouraging this practice at all I just would not let a mistake made by a dealer stop me from riding tomorrow...of course unless the nut is not there which is very unlikely...best of luck.

If the nut is not in the primary then just put one on it i don't think there is anything special about it then you can ride but if it is in there you want it out, you dont want it to find it's way into the primary chain.

Yeah I do have passenger floor boards, but it is no big deal.

I don't think the nut can make it down into the primary, because the derby cover is so close to the clutch it would have banged the cover up a bunch on the inside before it made it down there.

I thought that too, but I checked and there is enough clearance for the nut to fit between the cover and the clutch. Although you would think that it would have left a mark and it is clean, no signs of anything hitting. I really don't see why they would have completely taken the lock nut off, so it hast to be in there.

Not yet, I am still thinking I will take it back and let them do it. That way if it did any damage its on them. I am also going to try to at least get the $200 labor back on the service.

Ok, so I took the bike in today and with the advise of people on the forum I kept my cool, I really do think that is always the best call, but if they had denied responsibility at all I would have came unglued. They scheduled a pick-up for later today and we will see how it goes. Before I left I bought a service manual.
