HELP!! Clutch Problem
Fluid is there, but I should have known there would be a problem. When I took the bike in I told the guy I had just changed the engine oil and filter and I saw him write in on the work order. When I picked up the bike I saw that he charged me for a chrome oil filter, I looked at it and although I keep my bike clean I could tell that they had changed it, even the guy at the counter could not understand why the guy would change the filter when they were not changing the oil...what the hell?? He credited my the money on the filter but I was worried what else the idiot had done. Now I know.
This might be your intro into self service. Remove the Derby cover, fish the bottom of the resevoir with a light weight wire. If you have a digital camera, photo missing nut.
If you decide to remove the Primary cover, the least you will have to replace is the cover gasket, derby gasket, and fluid, just for peace of mind. It won't hold in court, but photo everything and present it to the Service manager.

Have them tow it in and make it right. Then buy a service manual and do as much as you can yourself. I've found the local dealer mechanics are hit or miss. Good mech one visit and a bad one the next. I think that the dealers are pushing their people to do more work in less time so they can make more money. The bean counters run the place. Higher production at the cost of quality work.
I think I will try the wire, not much clearance to get in, but I will try. I am getting a manual right away, I am pretty good with a wrench so I think I will just do most the maintenance myself. I am going to have them fix this screw up but it will be the last thing they do on my bike. Its sad when you can't trust your local HD dealer to at least do the simple things. I have heard good things about the HD shop just south of here so anything major will go to them.
Time to go fishing with a magnet, if there's enough room. If it fell off it will most likely ended up stuck to the drain plug magnet. That is pretty wimpy and can eaisly be overpowered with a bigger one taped to a welding wire, coat hanger or whatever will get the job done. The trick is to not get it stuck to the ring gear or sprocket and chain while doing this. If it's in there , you're lucky it didn't get picked up with the oil and trash a whole bunch of expensive stuff. O well the dealer would have to pay for it. Bet they will play close attention to this nut in the future.

Not much room to get anything down there, I did check the splines I could see and I saw no marks or damage at all. No bad noises before I shut the bike down, so I hope no damage was done. The nut would have to be in there somewhere because there would be no reason for the tech to have taken it all the way off, but who knows?
Just take the primary cover off and get the nut out and adjust it and lock it down, it will take you less time than screwing with the dealer and even though you will need to put primary fluid back in it still will only cost you what the gas to get it back and forth to the dealer that you hope will do it right the second time and concider it lesson learned they dont care as much about your bike or safty as you do.
