My 98" engine does the same thing. Bike runs perfect but drips oil out of the filter. I run an open AC so it ends up on the bags. Not sure what causes it though.

I had been checking the oil level on my 08 ultra from the time it was new all wrong. I was setting the threaded plug on the threads and not screwing it all the way down. all with no problem.
8000 miles later, while cruising through Wyoming at 85 miles an hour, about 90 degress out, OIL is all over the side of the bike and the wife!
A call to AAA, get a tow to Casper Wyoming HD. They had sucked out a half a quart of oil and put a new filter on,( that was socked in 20-50w). They at CasperHD said with the heat, you need to run the oil level down a half a quart from full.
The best part.... the bill was 21.00 bucks, for the stock filter and no charge for labor, as they see this probem every week on the new bikes.
I hope this helps.

I just had the same problem this week around the same mileage on an 06' street glide I've had for a year. It was a hot day around 90 degrees, the bike had been sitting in the hot sun all afternoon and after work on the ride home I was maybe especially getting on it to blow off steam. I had just added a little bit of oil at 7500 miles because I had been checking both the hot and cold levels for a week and decided it could use a smidge. I put a little in at about 3000 miles too but that was early in the spring. Everything read right where it was supposed to on the dipstick after I added some oil. But like you I blew oil all over the right side of the bike and bags. I noticed it two or three days after I added oil. I have a stage 1 and a arlen ness filter. I cleaned the filter out with a air compressor and removed all the extra oil I added with a syringe. No problems since and now will keep it a smidge below full! :-)

I guess from taking to my harley riding co-workers that similar problems have happened to them. One had some hoses crack back there with an oil leak and another of my co-workers had a bolt under the air cover back out and fall off on a trip to sturgis and it was pumping out oil on his 04' ultra classic. He had to shut it down until he found a replacement bolt as it was really pumping oil out. There was oil all over the right side of my bike but truthfully there wasn't that much oil leaking. It doesn't take much oil to look like a huge problem. I asked about it in a similar thread earlier this week and someone also said that if the filter was over oiled if you are riding it hard that it only takes a small mist on the over oiled filter to get a drip.

I guess everything was working the way it was supposed to and I won't worry about it until it breaks...so far my bike is still running good and with no more leaks. Hope this eases your worries.

The screamin eagle a/c cleaner back plate has a hole throught each back plate post that attaches to each cyclinder head. The bolt that goes in there is also hollo with a hole in the side of the bolt that vents into the air cleaner. This vents the crankcase pressure. Your engine burns some of the oil. But if the engine has more than 3.5 qrts oil, or the air filter has not been serviced in a while and has become saturated with oil on the bottom, you will see oil coming out down the left side of your bike. I keep mine just a tad below 3.5 qrts and have never blown oil out, and thats even on 103 degree days in Sacramento getting on it hard.

The manual does say to screw the oil stick all the way in, than check it. Its better to check it hot too. The dip stick has a cold check side, and a hot check side, both sides show different levels.

close to 8 grand on the clock and no oil in air filter problems here. I do my own services, by the book, put in 3.5 qts with new oil filter, start & run bike, then recheck. It's 1/2 quart low, then I add the remaining 1/2 quart.

Not quite right... the two sides are for whether you have the bike on the kick stand or sitting level with a side car attached. I add just under 4 quarts (more like 3.5) and keep the oil level right in the middle (screwing the dipstick cap all the way in to check it). Never had a drop of oil come out of the air cleaner yet!

Yeah, better the sump a bit low than too full. I believe AIM had an article on this last year.
