Sounds like you're getting special treatment. CONUS-to-CONUS moves require 4 years TOS (unless the needs of the AF dictate otherwise.) Lucky you. You're doing the right thing moving the bike yourself. Rent the trailer; you'll do okay financially.

You may check around but when I came back from overseas several years ago they packed up my bike pretty good. It may have been in the same container as my furniture but it was packed very well. It didn't suffer any damage at all. Find out who the movers will be and ask them how they will pack it. I was in the navy and I know what youre going thru. Good luck. I know NC has got some good roads but I bet you find some good ones out west too.
