Default Preparing for 5000 mile service

I'm going to do this myself to save some cash, but I need some input on doing the following items on the check list. My bike only has 4000 miles on it, but it has beenalmost a year since my last service so I am going to go ahead and change it. I am going back with Mobile 1 20w50 in Engine and Mobile 1 75w90 in tranny. I have a service manual as well. Any help is appreciated:

1. inspect brake pads and disc for wear - what should I look for?
2. check and adjust primary drive chain - what do I look for, how do I adjust?
3. check and adjust clutch - what do I look for, how do I adjust?
4. replace spark plugs - just replaced plugs about 1000 miles ago, should not needto do so again right?
5. check engine stabilizers and mounts - do I just make sure they are tight?
6. lubricate the front brake lever, throttle and cables, speedometer cable, clutch control cable and lever, jiffy stand - how do I lube cables, levers? What do I use to lube jiffy stand (WD40?)
7. check shock absorbers - what do l look for on shocks?
8. check front fork bearing adjustment - I am clueless on this one.
9.Do I need to grease frame neck (where the little grease fitting is), if so what kind of grease?

Any reccomendations on a fluid to use in the primary? Thinking of using Formula + again, or Mobile 1 20w50.

Sorry for the long post, but this will be a great resource for me and others as well.

Being an ex-mechanic, my first comment is to read that service manual you have.

Generally speaking, every procedure the technician performs is spelled out in the manual. There may not be enough pictures or the instructions may be skimpy, but the procedure should be there. Of course, there is no good reason not to supplement your Harley library with several of the other aftermarket service manuals out there.

As for what to do... look at the back of your owner's manual. The 5000 mile check, as well as all others, is listed and every check item required is shown. Another suggestion is to get the specialized tools the maintenance check requires. One I'm sure of is the belt tension gauge; maybe some specific allen and torx wrenches.

Finally, instead of asking in the softail section, go to the section of the board dealing with tech issues and ask the questions there... and/or do a search. Having run one of these boards for a while, I can almost guarantee your question has been asked and answered any number of times in those forums.

thanks,

I am reading the service manual maintenance section front to back, but sometimes it's easier to understand if someone else explains it. I am ordering the oil filter wrench, belt tension tool, etc. I printed off a 5000 mile maintenance checklist from my dealer. I just thought that posting here would be good b/c I have come to trust a lot of the guys on the softail board.

thanks for the help

Nice looking ride Warg (nice garage as well). Looks like you spent quite a bit in accessories. It deserves to be treated and taken care of by a professional or someone with experience.Besides if something goes wrongyou can always go back to them. Just my 2 c.
