Default HD LED gas gauge (HELP)

I have an 07 Heritage solftail and I have replaced my factory gauge with the HD LED 75235-03A and the instructions state to hook the grey wire under my console to the yellow wire so I did and when I hook the grey wire up the blue led lights on the gauge goes to red and blinkplus the low fuel light comes on. I unhook the grey wire and the lights on the gauge goes back to blue and works plusthe low fuel light goesoff. Well I decided to leave the grey wire unhook it seem to work ok but the instructions say to connect it. Well I have rode my bike several time and the gauge has works fine with on low fuel light on. Until I filled up my tank and the now the low fuel light comes on until I drive it about 20 miles then it will go off. Has anyone installed one theses HD gauges on their 07 Heritage that might can give me some advice onhow to solve this problem or should I just live with the low fuel light only coming on for this short period!!
Just thinking someone may have faced this same problem that could give me some advice. Thanks

Default RE: HD LED gas gauge (HELP)

I just installed the skull LED gauge on my bike last night, I read that the gray wire replaces the yellow/white wire. I dont have the small tool to remove that Yellow/white wire so I just left the gray wire alone for the mean time. But that caused my Low fuel amber light to stay on even though my tank is full. My skull gauge reads perfect. How did uroute the gray wire from the bottom of the tank to the Speedo? I couldn get it in the rubber tube so i just routed it ouside. Looks cheesy. Did u remove the cable ties? Anyone know where to get that pin remover. Or hoe to extract those pins?

I just installed this same gauge on my bike, but I only have less than a gallon of gas in it so I am not sure if it works yet. I just assumed it worked, until now Thanks a lot!

Anyway, as chivohead666 said, the instructions read that the gray wire should replace the yellow/white wire, not connect to it. Can you confirm this is what you did?

As mentioned in my previous post, I just installed the same gauge as rcmty. I ran the wire through the tunnel, into a small hole I cut in the rubber tube that houses the wire harness, which runs up into the console.

I have been doing a lot of work(mechanical and electrical) on my bike and my wife's bike lately, so I don't remember which connector is which anymore. But I either used a dental tool, paper clip, or a small sewing pin with the tip cut off for that one. Those are the 3 tools I have used for pin extraction recently, depending on the connector assembly.

I was considering getting the LED gauge and installing it myself but sound like I may have to pay the stealer to do it. Let me know what happens with the grey wire and yellow wire issue.

No pin removal tool needed, plus I doubt there is one that's small enough. The service manual tells you how to do it. I use a jewelers screw driver and just apply a little upward pressure from the front of the connector while gently pulling on the wire. It will slide right out.

Ur talking about the Fuel gauge connector right? I got that one out , No Problems. But the one for the Speedo is way different. First u have to remove the secondary lock then use a small pin. Im gonna try apaper clip, or a small sewing pin with the tip cut off like that dude suggested.

I installed that kit some time ago and I remember the grey wire being a pain also but I used it so the low fuel light would stay off...I also looked into the tools required to get the pins loose under the speedo and what a pain trying to find it...So I didn't bother, I used the existing pin and cut the wire to it and soldered the grey wire to it and used shrink wrap...No problems thus far on two bikes....

I'm with billvaughn...I tried to locate the proper connector tools to remove the pin and decided that for a one time jobit was not worth the effort. Electrically speaking, cutting the yellow/white wire and connecting the grey wire to it was what was called for, and exactly what I did. I used a solderless connector and double-wall shrink tube (double-wall shrink tube has the adhesive inside the tube that melts when heated to provide a weather tight connection). I simply terminated the other end of the yellow/white wire and shrink tubed it as well. All lights work as advertised with my LED mod.

As faras routing the grey wire to the console goes...it is clearly one of those jobs where you need three hands! I had removed my tank for several other mods I was doing at the same time soaccess to the main wiring harness and the frame backbone that runs through the center of the gas tank was very good.I put the grey wire in some flexible conduit for a single wire, and when I reinstalled the tank I routed the wire and the conduit under and through the flexible collar (the black rubber piece that sits in front of the tank) and up to the console. A few zip-ties later and some wiring-bundle shifting I had a slick, professional looking job that any HD mechanic would have been proud to have claimed as his work!

Good luck...

Steve
