+1 on the belt dressing. Buddies bike made a hell of a squeal, I thought it was metal on metal. Sprayed belt dressing on it and it was completely gone. Worth a try, if it goes away then its probably the belt. Any auto parts store---cheap.

Thanks to all who recommended the belt dressing. I sent the following PM to iclick.

I didn't get a chance to adjust my belt so on a whim I followed some of the guys advice in the thread and bought some belt ease spray. Bike started it's rotational squealing like a mother on the way home from the parts store. I got home, removed the left saddlebag and sprayed the belt and rear pully with the belt ease. Just got back from a long cruise and didn't hear a peep. Man, WHAT A RELIEF. Rides like it was new and I'm not scared a wheel bearing is about to go out on me.

Got it and replied. Thanks. Will try it once I find out if "belt ease spray" is a specific brand. I have some Prestone Belt Dressing here.

I just notice mine with the whine. I thought it was coming from the inter-primery.
I'll have to check the belt..
I got 20k miles on mine.

Lot's has happened since I started this thread in Aug. 2008. The whine turned into a drone and by Sept. 2009 we pulled the tranny apart, which revealed a bad tranny mainshaft bearing (#8967). The plastic walls were disintegrating and one needle had fallen out, causing the others to obviously lose their integrity in the casing. It was replaced in warranty even though it was 10 months out of the factory warranty. I had reported the noise before the warranty expired and that made all the difference.

If you have a whine that is mostly heard at idle and sounds like it originates in the primary it may be the tensioner, which is a normal sound if not too loud. Mine has always had a tensioner whine and my old RK which had the auto-tensioner installed as an accessory also had it. I can hear mine at idle but above that it is drowned-out buy other noises. If the whine is audible at speed, as I described originally in this thread, and isn't related to gear or clutch lever position it may be the same problem I had. I would listen for any changes and if it gets worse have it looked at. Also check the tranny drain-plug magnet for metal particles, as anything more than a few small ones wouldn't be good. Mine never did show any particles, which is why I didn't suspect any failure in the tranny.
