Default Changing handlebars on RK

Has anyone personally done a handlebar change on their RK? I bought HD extended reach handlebars for my new RK along with an electrical cable extension kit and new grips and now I wonder if I'm capable of doing the install. I could have it done by the dealer at 1000 mile checkup, but, I'd like it sooner. Need advice from the brethren. Thanks!

Found it:http://www.vtwintalk.com/m_24987/mpa...tm#24987#24987

You can use the search engine to look for other posts related to handlebar change as well, you can do it Ted.

I replaced my 2005 RK Classic bars with the RK Custom pull back beach bars and did not have any problems with it. I did use a service manual and would highly suggest getting one for this procedure and for general reference. Let me know if I can help.

Thanks, John. It's just getting up the nerve, I guess. Hate to tear into a brand new bike, but, those handlebars will fit my arm length better.

Definitely get the shop manual. If you follow it, you can do it...step by step. Just take your time. I changed the stock bars on my '05 Road King Classic to Wild 1 Chubbies (WO508's) and just finished tonight. If I can do it, you can too. You'll need a set of Torx bits, hex keys, sockets, wrenches, and torque wrenches. Good luck.

Hey Tom,

I'm about to install a set of 518's. Did you have to extend your wires, or are they long enough to reach without any modification?

Thanks,
Rick

there is really nothing to it, just take your time. i went from the stock bars to the hd road king high bars, and i didnt have to change cables or wires, but it's still the same principle. just take your time, and you will be alright.

I changed the bars on my 1995 Roadking. Not a real problem, just a little time consuming. I also changed a set on a Roadking in a parking lot in Oklahoma City for a young guy that had crashed and bent his bars while on his way to the 100th anniversay. The dealership was too busy to do it for him, and I was just hanging around anyway.

Just get a shop manual and follow it. You'll be fine, and the satisfaction of doing your own work is gratifying.

Regards,

Bill
