For anybody who sat in their garage for hours, staring at the crappy HD instructions, trying make sense of a handful of parts, and trying out new swear words, while you were trying to mount the quick detach hardware on an 08 or earlier.....the 09 mounting system takes 10 minutes. And thats if you stop for beer between sides. Finally, they got it right!
So, if you can do ANY wrenching at all, do not pay to have your backrest mounted!
Question for you since youve already taken the plunge. I have a adjustable backrest on my 06 ultra. I will be transfering it to my 09 ultra. Is it true that all I will need buy is the 09 mounting bracket that will be available this month. thanks
Man, I really don't think that any of your stuff is going to transfer. I may be wrong, but looking at the new stuff, it's a whole different set up. The fender struts are completely new, so the backrest uprights are, as well. On the old backrests, the uprights bolted to the side plates, and on the new one I saw, it was all one piece. The front docking port on the upright now slid over the top of the shock instead of a docking pin. Plus, without measuring I don't know for sure, but I think the new fender width is gonna hose ya.
The new luggage rack also is a new design. It doesn't bolt to the uprights at all, and actually, mounts completely independent of the back rest.
Like I said, I've been wrong before, so ask your parts guy, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
From what I've read on other threads, the answer is yes. Several people have said they transferred over their RIDER backrests to an '09 by using only the new mounting bracket that is now sold separate from the backrest. Good to see MoCo thinking about the previous owners upgrading for a change. Also, the new mounting brackets allow more fore/aft movement as reported in other threads.
Yes, I was referring to the drivers backrest. It appears all the pads are the same parts # but you have to buy the new docking hardware for the 09. I do not have my new bike yet, buy what I can siffer out of the parts catalog, I just need to spend the money on the docking stuff I hope?? I couldnt ride without a backrest.......
