I have the SE 6 speed. Either way you go, you wont really utilize 6th until 60-70 depending on what kind of low end torque you have. After making the decision on a 6 speed, I road the Ultra for about 2000 miles keeping in mind gear selection. I use 5th way more than I was looking for a 6th. So I wanted the OD 6 (keeping 5th direct drive) and went with the SE. Now, If I was doing mostly over the road (highway) I would probably have went with the Bakker DD6. The SE works so much better than the 5 speed and shifts effortlessly. And when getting on the slab, slipping it into 6th is sweet. Cruse all day long at 75 turning about 2800.
Not only am I a Baker fan I work there. The DD6 would (of course) be my choice there is no modifacation to the case required, 5 year 50,000 mile warranty, it is quiet and the most efficient
a 6 speed is nice, however, on my '07, i rarely get into 6th unless i get tied into traffic running 75 or better. anything below 70, the 6th gear is useless, at least on a stocker it is.
I have a HD with the HD six speed. It is nice but I would never spend the cash to upgrade. It is nice to have but I never use it unless I am at 70 MPH, even then, on my old bike it was not big of thing. If you get a new HD it is nivce to have but not worth the $$ to upgrade IMO.
And if you put the 6 speed in, you might also consider doing the 3.37 gearing!
I have no complaints with the gearing. I can pull 6th @ 50 but the cam in my bike will make good torque @ 2000. I usually never select 6th until 60 just to keep the motor from lugging. With the 3.21 first and .89 OD it just fits the pre 07 baggers better than the new gearing. (I road one, they suck!)
The case mod is not difficult and the other reason I went with the OD 6 is the 6th OD multiples as you gain road speed and the DD6 does not. I also think that the .86 Bakker OD6 would have been too deep making it resemble the current models. I am not endorsing either products but on a pre 07 bagger, It is either the SE or bakker DD6.
I find myself seldom using 6th anymore, even running 75 on the interstate if I'm pulling any hills I stay in 5th. If I'm on a flatter road I'll use 6th, but find I actually get better mpg in 5th even running 65 on the 2-lane highways.
