Hey guys and gals, love this forum so much info and great people!!
I am considering buying a wrecked bike probably an ultra!! I am a auto technician buy trade so the tech stuff is a not a problem and I have access to the body shop for paint!!!
So how many people have bought bikes like this and repaired them not for resale but for a bike of there own???
Was it worth it or did yo spend way more that you figured!!!!!!!!!!
I have been looking looks like around 8500.00 to over 9000.00 for a late model with low miles
You can save a bunch of money doing it that way. I wouldn't want one that had a tweaked frame though. If you plan on keeping it and understand that the salvage title would hurt resale it would be a good project. It's also satisfying doing things yourself anyway.
I bought mine but it had already been repaired. It has a rebuilt title. Saved $4k from buying new. I know I'll loose if I got rid of it but have no plans on doing that.
Bike still had a warranty, only 3k miles on it and has been paid off since I bought it. I'm more than happy. It rides like any other and nobody knows that it was wrecked unless I tell them.
I'd be hesitant to rebuild a tourer, especially a late model Ultra. There's a lot of wiring and electronics in tight spaces that don't take kindly to being crashed. I've got a family member who has spent weeks chasing down electrical faults after a fairly minor crash on his and is still at it.
That said, I'm looking for a wrecked pre '04 sporty for the exact same purpose.
If the frame needs replacement, its not worth, they don't total light cosmetic stuff anymore. I have seen great restorations of wrecks and they dog track. Best find one for 11K and have a good title.
I bought a '99 Ultra for a project and due to the "Salvage" title, my project ended up costing me 2x what I paid for the darn project in the end.
As much as it can save you, if you 'ever' choose to sell the bike, you won't be able to sell to anyone who has to get financing...banks will not finance anything on a salvage title (or very very rarily, at the very least).
a very good friend of mine bought a very very bad wrecked 06 dyna
about the only thing that was any good was the 95 ci motor.
To make a long story short he has the newest and best 06 harley davidson
bike he has ever had for 13,000.00 total give or take a hundred or two
