Default '09 Standard, RADIO INSTALL

After plenty of reading and asking ALOT of questions, I finally started my install yesterday. Here's the list...........

Alpine reciever/iPod controller IDA-X100
ARC 125.2 mini
Alpine Type R SPR-13S component speakers
Hogwired cradle and bezel (on order)

I also bought an extension for the iPod wire because I was going to install the iPod in one of the bags, but I went a different route instead.

Yesterday, I started by taking the two upper guages (fuel and volt) and relocating them to the lower openings that way the tweeters will be more upwards to my ears.

Today, I ran the 12V and ground wire from the battery through the tank console and into the fairing. I also ran the iPod USB cable from the fairing, through the tank console and along the frame to where it will be housed in a guard bag. I know it needs to be cleaned up, RELAX! I'm still waiting for the cradle and bezel from Hogwired.

Here you can see the bag and the USB cable. I still need to make an opening for the cable into the bag.

I was initially going to house the iPod in the three pocket fairing pouch I picked up, but I would have to drill a hole in the fairing to get it in there and I just couldn't do it. I would love to keep the iPod up front, hidden somewhere, but I haven't found anything yet. Maybe by the time I finish the install.

I'll be updating this as I go along so stay tuned. Maybe tomorrow I'll install the 5-1/4" speakers and tweeters along with the crossovers. I plan on installing the tweeters in those blank pods that filled the two missing guage holes. I already test fitted them in the holes without the pods and they fit perfect, but those pods cover these small indentations in the fairing holes so I'd like to go that route if I can.

One more thing, with the money I saved in labor for this project ($570.00), I went and purchased the Brawler seat. That will be going on after everything is all said and done.

In case anyone was wondering about the bar controls, I will be getting that taken care of as soon as everything is in. I'm still a little weary of doing it myself since there are a few wires to cut and splice and I have no clue what I'm looking for. It just seems easier to have the shop do it for me for the measly $100.00.

Oh ya, depending on the seat height, I might be swapping my stock shocks out for some SG ones.

Looks like a nice set up. If your tweeters fit in the guage holes you could of just punched a hole between the speedo and fuel gauge and the rpm and oil gauge. I have seen that set up on a couple of bikes and it looks good and functional. Then you can install an oil temp gauge to read while your listening to the sounds. Looks good and I bet it will sound good too.

Only suggestion that I have...because I had to do it..is to route your wiring UNDER the tank..just in case you have to remove the tank..you won't have undo the wiring to take it off. ( if possible that is..I have an older model..so there is room.)

i was just looking at your speakers on the internet and see the woofer cone is a hybrid pulp composition. you may want to return those and consider some jl audio or mb quart speakers as they have a titanium dome that is more weather resistant. arc audio also has componet speakers of a high quality. just a thought

+1 on routing the wiring under the tank. With the '08 and newer models, the gas tank can be removed without draining the gas since there is no crossover tube as on the earlier gas tanks.

The plastic tray will need to be removed to install the headunit using the hawg-wired mounting kit.

The wiring diagram on the PAC website appears to be for an '05 and older models since it shows a 23 wire audio connector, but IIRC the '06 and newer models use a 35 wire connector. Don't know about the wiring assignments.

Excellent pics and thanks for sharing.

One quick question, where the 5-1/4" speakers mount on the inner fairing there is a rather thick hard plastic ring. Is this where the speaker mounts or do I remove it and mount the speaker directly to the fairing?

Thanks

the plastic ring needs to be removed and replaced with part # 77047-98. its the same ring but thicker at the bottom to allow the speakers to be angled upward. i would also suggest you replace the hardware with sheetmetal screws with a hex head as it iis easy to strip the torx heads when tapping the speaker holes

OK, another question..............

Does that ring need to be flipped over when installed with the speaker? The reason I ask is because the speaker doesn't fit in the spacer hole if I place it in there exactly off the bike. It actually sits on part of the speaker. It looks like I would need to trim the inner circle of the spacer for the speaker to fit. If I flip it over, it fits right in, but there are two offset tabs which would actually aim the speaker more towards me like stated in the previous post. If I do flip it over, the screen need to be removed and placed on the other side of the ring which is no big deal.

Which way does this thing go??? Hopefully someone can picture this, if not I could take pics.
