Default Thinking about an Ultra Classic

Dave here,
i am planning on renting an ultra classic in the next week or so to see how it rides, but i have a few questions now. i am currently on an 05 Deluxe.
can anyone tell me if there is a big difference between the 2 in how it handles?
the dealer told me the ultra would be much better on the curves and twisties than the deluxe because the forks are in a different position than the deluxe.
anyone heard of that ?
thanks
Dave

We can all describe this to you, and each will be a little different. Everyone here is going to tell you the touring models ride much better than the rigid mounted softail models. But you'll find out for yourself when you ride. The geometry is different, as is the suspension, and if you're renting an 09 Ultra, we'd all like to hear your feedback after the rental experience. So get your face in the wind and report back. It won't be long before you come to the Dark Side.

I agree with Big Sky. Ride quality is a subjective call you'll have to make on your own. All I can say is with more wind protection and a stereo, you'll likely find the Ultra more enjoyable to ride.

Rent the Ultra and test for yourself - For 2 up riding you can't beat the Ultra's handling though!

I have an 05 Heritage and have ordered a new Ultra. I have test ridden at 2 different dealers. The ride is great and it handles as well as the Heritage for cornering. Be aware of the seat height though. It's going to be a lot higher than your deluxe. We are trying to figure out how to lower it without giving up handling. By the way, I didn't want to give back the ones that I rode.

I had a Heritage Softail for 10 years doing several long road trips and tons of weekend riding. I finally decided to get a touring bike and got an Ultra a few months ago. I never thought I could find a more comfortable bike than my Heritage, needless to say I haven't missed it at all. The Ultra handling in the corners is much better, I solved the seat height by getting a lower profile seat...test ride one and I'm sure you won't want to return it. Radio & Cruise control are great!!!

You're doing the right thing by renting one and getting the time in the saddle to make sure it fits your needs.

If you are going to lower your bike, I would suggest you lower both the front and the rear, so that the rake/trail calculations maintain equilibrium. If you lower only the rear, you will find that the handling is not as 'nimble' as it is normally from the MoCo.
