Default 79B Motor Mount

Here's an update on my 4th 79B motor mount install.
This one only lasted 1500 miles. I have 2 more spares but I'm almost ready to give up on them but the ride is much smoother than the newer version.
The top portion of the mount is good but the bottom rubber continues to tear.
Has anyone tried the new 79D? Is it any better than the 79C?

Went through this myself two years ago on my 01 Ultra. Have your dealer check to see that the engine is properly aligned in the chassis. I tore 3 motor mounts in 600 miles. I was so disgusted, I took the bike to the dealer and had them take a look. The motor was out of alignment in the chassis.

Look up at the rubber part of the mount from underneath. You WILL know if it's torn. Also from the top, the bracket will be sitting right down on top of the mount.

You must have an alignment problem going on, I am still running the original mount from 1998.

Default My Front Engine Mount Experience...So Far

After reading about the premature front engine mount failures, I decided to check mine. I have a 2006 RKC with 8K miles. Sure enough..cracked, torn, and the bottom part was missing a good bit of rubber. I went to my local dealer to inquire and see if they concurred with the info floating around on this forum. They were familiar with the service bulletin and agreed that the 79D was the best fix....for now... and of course there was no policy or good will adjustments from the MOCO. I told them to go ahead and order one for me as they were out of stock and within a few days discovered they were on backorder and to expect two to three weeks for delivery. Living up north, our short riding season is precious so I decided to give Hales HD in Ohio a try (had read so many good things about their service). They had 11 of them in stock at nearly 25 percent less cost than the local dealer. I'm not here to throw stones at our local dealer...they treat me well...and the value of a good local dealer relationship is often worth a little higher price. None the less, in the interest of time, I ordered one from Jim at Hales yesterday. Much to my surprise it was in my mail box today. To top it off, I recieved a followup email from Lee Hale thanking me for my business....pretty damn good service.

I installed the mount this evening. The old mount wasnt quite as bad as I thought, but it was cracked and part of the rubber was missing...It was not totally collapsed. The service manual has a good diagram of the mount and the torque specification for each related bolt. Total time was about and hour and a half.

For some of those that are going throught so many mounts so fast, the first thing I would look at is the torque on the center mount bolt. The book calls for 15 to 18 ft lbs. This is pretty snug but I could see where it would seem that in such a critical area, one might easliy over tighten. Second I would look at the remainder of the mounting system and the alignment of the engine. Thanks to you guys that posted some of the tips and "how to's"..it was a big help

I am told these work great - as long as you change them with each oil change... they wear out FAST...
