pulled over for Apes?
California is six inches over shoulders:
27801. A person shall not drive a two-wheel motorcycle that is
equipped with either of the following:
(a) A seat so positioned that the driver, when sitting astride the
seat, cannot reach the ground with his or her feet.
(b) Handlebars so positioned that the hands of the driver, when
upon the grips, are more than six inches above his or her shoulder
height when sitting astride the seat.

Apologies for the thread hijack but I gotta' ask...
What is the attraction of apes? While I think subtle apes (ala Street Bob) are kinda' cool looking, the extreme apes look positively stupid. I have ridden apes and found them to be uncomfortable and they turn me into a human sail at highway speed. (I felt like I was on the bow of the Titanic yelling "I'm king of the world!")
Or is this an example of "If you have to ask, you wouldn't understand." ???
What say ye?

Towjam,, ya know, I guess the old rule of to each is own appleis just about everywhere. Personally, I guess I just always loved the look of apes on Harleys, back in the early 70's my brothers all had awesome choppers stretched out for a mile, and apes wer king, too bad I was a little kid then! This might be why I personally love the look. I put 12's on my Sporty because I didn't know how they ride, now on my RK that's the first thing I'm gonna do, 16". I am 6'1" and I just love the feel of being about straight out with my arms. Save son deodorant too
I do think huge apes on small bikes look horrible. I saw a 100th ann. Sporty with 20"s and it looked hideous, but take those same 20"s and put them on a big bike like a RK and they look fine to me.
My taste in looks, nothing looks cooler than a Dyna or Softail std. with 18"'s. Whenever i see one, I just smile wide. Too bad I ride 2-up or otherwise that's what my new bike would have been.

A few years back VA repealed it's handlebar law. With that in mind, I did a set of chubby 18's on a Fat Boy. It was approaching time for Myrtle Beach, and my Road King wasn't ready, so off on an aped out FB I go. The bars were surprisingly comfortable. I noticed my lower back didn't hurt as bad as it had in past trips on other bikes. The killer was not having a windshield.[:@] I'll never do a trip like that again with out one. By the time we were on the way home, I would have traded that damn thing for a Yugo with no A/C. Anyway, while I was at MB, I got pulled a total of 3 times for my bars. Needless to say I was hot. [sm=icon_flaming.gif]It finally dawned on me after the third time, that I was being "profiled".[sm=dontgetit.gif] At the time, I was working a plain clothes narcotics assignment, and my appearance was anything but professional, to say the least. I was even more ticked after that hit me. Back to my point though. All 3 times, I politely told the officer that the handlebar law in SC, was a "non-reciprocal" law with VA. [sm=bicker.gif]For example: Joe drives through VA in his SC registered car, with windows so dark you could mistake 12 noon for midnight from inside. Max tint in VA is 35% for the front windows. I can't write ole Joe for his dark windows, because he's in compliance with his states laws. In reality, I can write him, but any Judge is gonna toss it if he comes to court. Likewise, by VA law, I was legal, and since I didn't have my bike registered in SC, it wasn't really any of his business. I also told him, that if he chose to write me a summons, I would most definately be back for court, code section in hand, to plea my case.[sm=bs.gif] None of the three wrote me, and only one bothered to ask why I knew so much about the law. He also happend to be the one I was with when it hit me, I was being profiled for my appearance. I called him out on it, and watched as he turned red in the face. That's when he asked how I knew so much about the law, and I told him what I did for a living. He admitted that he was certain, I was "holding". I assured him that I was not, and he said I was right on the handlebar law. Am I, am I not?[sm=confused06.gif] I really can't say. It was just the first line of BS that came to mind, and I knew I didn't want to pay a big dollar ticket at the beach. It sounded good enough to get out of the 2 prior stops. I really think I am right on the matter, but you may try the same argument, and still get a ticket. Just an idea for some of you "apers" out there that travel to other states. It probably won't help your cause either, if you look like you "just pulled about 5 at county, and you're holding".[sm=bustedsign.gif] Here all this time, I thought I was just Mama's little angel. [sm=devilangel.gif]
I have told more than one cop to shove it, and will do it again. Plus they got to catch me first.[sm=badbadbad.gif][sm=gears.gif]. But then again according to what was posted earlier I have another 6 inches to go before I am Breakin the law, Breakin the law.

there is obviously an inherent danger or the lawmakers in every state wouldn't have given it so much attention. i listen to people tell me how comfortable they are and i am bewildered. i worked in the family H-D shop thru college in the early seventys and i hated putting them on customers bikes. you have to be really tall to be effective. how many riders do you see at stop lights shaking their hands to get the circulation back. Florida will stop and ticket with no other offense committed. i know someone who got three tickets for having them on the same day in daytona.
