Default 09 Road Glide - Oil Cooler question

I've decided that today is the day I am going to order a new 09 Road Glide. Heading out shortly to do so.

Here's my question. I am thinking I need an Oil Cooler installed on the bike and I like the one that Harley offers. (Premium Oil Cooler kit w/ chromed cover)

Is this a good cooler or do you guys recommend something else?

Most important, is this something I can easily do at home or should I build it in with the bike purchase and just let the dealer do the install? The kit is roughly $300, how much do you think a dealer will charge to install it?

Here's the link to the one I saw and liked:

If I don't buy an extended warranty at time of purchase, will HD offer it to me before the std warranty runs out?

I have the same cooler on my 07. I did the install but if I were you I'd have it done before you take it home.

I do think you are doing the right thing. As I've said many times before and it can be argued of course . . .

All 96" motors should have an oil cooler.

Go ahead and let them do the install , some dealers give you a break on stuff bought at time of purchase .. It's not hard to do , but , what the hey ..

I installed that cooler on my '07 myself. It's a very simple install. It lowered the oil temperature by 30 degrees on a normal day here in Florida. However, twice now on cool days or in rain, the temperature dropped so far that my oil temperature gauge couldn't read it. I've had a cover made in case I get caught in cold enough temperatures that I can't raise the oil to where it needs to be. My thermostat may be faulty, or Harley may just have cooling solved. I'm not convinced that a cooler is needed, in fact I added mine to reduce the new motors overall heat problem for the rider. It wasn't really noticeable. YMMV

I have the same one on my '08 and did the install myself, it's very straightforward. It may depend on how many accesories you plan to add-on. The more you add on, the more you're payin' in labor to let the dealer put all this stuff on for ya. $60-70/ hour labor adds up real quick to be a lot of money if you plan to add a lot of cool sh*t!

Yes, the extended warranty can be purchased before the factory warranty expires. Not sure how long a term you can buy later; I bought three years. Your dealer will have a copy of their standard extended service plan--take 5 minutes to read it and see if it is for you.

And shop other HD stores for the price of the extended warranty--it's a high margin item and dealers can deal on them. Try Zanotti's and get a price from them and use it to negotiate a better price from your bike selling dealer.

Took me 30 min to install oil cooler and i took my time. It's so simple just looking at the parts you can figure it out. If they will do it for free let them otherwise do it your self. If you can change your oil you can certainly add the cooler.

That's the kind of thing I was hoping to hear from someone. I am not a master mechanic by no means but I am mechanically inclined and tend to be a do it yourselfer with simple modifications. My last bike needed tires, I pulled the wheels off myself etc. Simple bolt on stuff I'm fine with. I will do the cooler myself then. Thanks to all who replied.
