I want to keep it inside the fairing for that clean look.........I'm just wondering if the stock HD mount would be better then on top of the stock radio.

Is the stock HD mount just a simple piece of steel that is bent and held on by the fairing support bracket?

Steve
Steve: Keeping it inside the fairing will, IMO, degrade the performance as compared to outside.

Yes, the stock HD mount is a simple piece of steel that mounts inside the fairing. It is specifically made to slide onto one of the fairing mounts and use an existing mounting bolt. Another pic below.

Here's a couple of pics (not mine) showing the exact way I have mine mounted.

Steve:

Here's a final pic of an antenna mounted above the left speaker grill on the outside of the bike, on the inner fairing. In this particular pic, the antenna is a bit noticible; but on a stock flat black inner fairing it is barely noticible.

BTW: still not getting email notification.............

Hope this helps, and good luck!

Ben

...so what method is used to adhere the antenna to the fairing pieces? I'd guess double sided tape would work, or that heavy duty velcro

I'm going to do some experimenting when I get my new antenna this week, just picked one up for $10 online.

I'll try the new on inside the fairing and see if it works better, if not I'll look for a hidden spot outside of the fairing to mount it and see how that works.

Well now I don't know what to do.

I got the new antenna and was installing it yesterday. Put it on top of the radio inside the fairing, wheeled the bike into the yard with the outer fairing off, and still couldn't get a good signal at all. Move it around and still nothing......that totally doesn't make sense at all. It had a clear shot to the sky with nothing in it's way at all........no signal.

I really don't know what the hell is going on with this thing. It worked great for about 3 years with the antenna on the radio inside the fairing.......2-3 bars of signal all the time. Now all of a sudden this summer it decides that it doesn't want to work any longer.

Is there a reset switch on the sat receiver itself?
Maybe call your provider and have them refresh your connection? I had to do that when I got mine up and running in my truck...

My radio is over 3 years old, and it's about time for a replacement. It's been dropped, has a cracked case, and is swapped between my car, bike, and boombox quite often so the connections might be worn out a bit also.

I'm checking out ebay for a new radio now, looking for the same radio since I'm all set up for it.

Well I did some work tonight to try and fix this problem............and it looks like it worked. I went back to my original antenna, only I moved it back to inside the tourpak. I hot-glued it on top of the inner liner where it bumps out for the taillights. Ran the wire up and under the tank, up to thru the fairing to the Sirius radio. Pushed it out in the yard and bingo...........3 bars of signal.

Can't under stand why it couldn't get signal thru the plastic fairing, but now it's getting perfect signal thru the fiberglass tourpak lid.

Oh well...........it's working and I'm happy.
