It is pad movement. Try this! While holding in the brake push the bike forward and back couple of times. Get thet front shock moving up and down. Then brake hard, front brake, the first time at slow speed, or fast speed just freaked me out more, you will get the clunk once then no more for the ride. I found that parking in the drive on angle it happened more.
It happens when you are rolling the bike backward, and then you apply the brake. That makes the pads on the front also slide a bit to the rear of the caliper. Then when you have the bike in gear and are rolling off, the first time you apply the front brakes the pads slide to the front of the caliper, and you will hear the clunk. It will not happen again until you apply the front brakes while rolling the bike backwards.....then you will hear the clung the first time you hit the fronts again. Totally normal.....but I have only noticed it on the 08' model with Brembo brakes.
I hear it everytime I squeeze in the clutch before going into 2nd gear & just a little going into 3rd gear too, but not as clear & distinct-sounding as before going into 2nd. I've been worried that there was something wrong with my bike since the first day I picked her up. The movement of the metallic parts in the brembo brake pads is exactly what my H-D mechanic told me it was when I got it looked at for a second opinion. The first H-D mechanic couldn't figure out what was causing the "clunk" noise?
