I thought about removing the backs, but not the fronts. That's until this past Monday.
I was in my driveway, and very tired, and went to make the same tight turn I always have to do. My turn was to the left and being tired I didn't bring my foot up to the boards quick enough, and my foot got stuck under the bag and guard. I was just applying the throttle also. Well my foot turned completely sideways under the bag and me and the bike went over hard, engine rpms going higher, and we dragged for about three feet. Lots of chrome damage and my knee (which has already had 3 operations and reconstructions) is full of fluid and I've barely walked since then.
Sorry for the long story, but............. I'll keep mine on!!
One other thing to think about. On Monday while about to pass an 18 wheeler on the interstate, one of the left outside tires on the trailer blew. I had nowhere to go and took the hit of the tread to the left side of the crash bar, the bottom of the board and my foot. It knocked the spring off the jiffy stand as well.
If I hadn't had the crash bar on there, I would have taken it all the hit to me left leg....
DANG guys !! My little tip over lecture ain't nutin compaired to your stories. YACHTMAN, I hope you recover soon.
You know, when I look at your names "BEERACUDA & YACHTMAN" , there seems to be a pattern with misfortune water related folks.
Just something to ponder... Drop it once without them on and see if you wish you had left them on. I left 'em on and added bag gaurds but that's only because I liked the old time look. I never realy thought of taking them off, but the pics. here do look nice. Here is how I know about damage. My foot slipped (while stopped) in sand in a parking lot , bike tipped over, ZERO damage. Taught me 2 things Be careful where you plant your foot and leave the bars on. By the way, Yes I know better but I was not paying attention like I should have been
sec1953. I hear ya, but that why I buy insurance. I'm not going to hang ugly thinghs on my bike, for the ,just in case, factor. A new paint job wouldn't be all bad anyway.

No nautical theme here...The Beeracuda is my racecar.
The car is a Barracuda and my partner, driver and I are all homebrewers, hence the name Beeracuda...

This is a case of to each his own. I like 'em all but bought the RKC because of the nostalgic look of wich removing them and the buckle bags would ruin. But remember I did say they do look cool without also. Just not mine.
I don't know about you but not worying about using my insurance would cause an increase in premiums. Besides I like my bike to much to scratch it & be without it for awhile... I ride every day.
